Everyone, I want to make it clear that I didn't post the weight of my bike to start a competition on whom has the lightest bike. I was just responding to a request from another member.

Yeah, well, that cat's outta the bag now! I don't think you have worry about my bike though... I suspect it's close to 30 lb.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet.... & just a hair over 24lbs, huh? NICE! no such luck with mine... haven't had a chance to weigh again since my 30.xxlb weigh-in, but considering I keep ordering MORE accessories, I don't see it getting LIGHTER any time soon... I'll post a list of the latest add-ons & hopefully have photos soon... =)

11.18 kg is light for a hybrid.

geez, thats light for anything other than a modern graphite race bike. my son has a very nice light cro-mo double butted trek frame from the 80s, outfitted with pretty light stuff (90's Ultegra gearing & crankset, 2x6 speeds, friction downtube shifters, 23c conti gators on thinwall tubes and mavic box rims w/ dura-ace hubs, dual-pivot side-pull brakes) and its about 11kg. it is a tall frame as he has long legs, that probably adds a kg.

thats not even close to a hybrid, regardless of what it might have started out as. With drop bars, spd pedals, skinny tires, thats what is commonly called a 'road bike'.

ATX 6Speed
02-23-11, 01:22 PM
Between the tires (28c), gearing, lack of brifters, relaxed geometry, etc., I wouldn't really call it a road bike. Regardless of what it's called it is mine and I enjoy riding it.

This is my 02 Giant Cypress SX as bought two years ago. It is currently under going a make over, frame is at the shop being powder coated (should be done in the next week or two), eliminating the twist shifters, going to a 1x9 with a Shimano XTR M970 shifter, Origin 8 Black Ops 29er carbon fork w/rim brakes, Ritchey carbon rizer bars and Ritchey stem, Ergon GP1 grips, Vuelta Zero Lite wheel set (picked up dirt cheap last summer), new cables, and a few other items. Glass beaded my crank arms and brake levers.
When all is re-assembled I will post another pic.191368

I accidently deleted my message. I should have mentioned I use 23mm (close to slicks) as most of my riding in in the city in dry conditions. I use a different bike for wet days.

That is weird, you are referring to my mountain bike, the Felt right? I never noticed that they felt funny, but looking at the picture I see what you mean.

qmsdc15

I think he's referring to your hybrid. The levers on the Felt appear to have less incline as they should. The brake levers should be in line with your forearms. Your position is different on each of your bikes.

Gotcha, I probably did that when I put on my new grips. I have done a few short rides since and I didn't notice it feeling funny. I will have to adjust them though as suggested and see if they feel better.

They don't look that different from how I put my levers on flat-bar bikes. I put them where my fingers go without having to kink my wrists back; you don't brake with your knuckles, do ya? ;)

On top of that, I tend to slide the shift levers inboard, too, so that I don't bump them with the backs of my thumbs. It only takes half an inch or so, but it's just enough to get them out of the way, and they're still close enough for my fingers & thumbs to operate.

qmsdc15
03-02-11, 06:31 PM
As Adel suggests, it's largely a matter of personal preference. I think when in need of hard breaking, as Barracks suggests, having your wrist kinked isn't desirable. Barracks sets his brake levers closer to vertical compared to the average hybrid rider, but he also has his handlebars lower than average relative to his saddle height. You like high bars, and your brake levers should probably be at least a little higher.

Yes, I agree you maybe put your handlebar back slightly wrong after you installed the new grips. :)

I've met some hardcore riders who have unconventional setups. In the end it's up to you! My hybrid is not normal.

BarracksSi
03-02-11, 07:01 PM
Yeah, I simply set mine according to where my hands are the most comfortable. If I want to, I can ride with my fingertips on the brake levers the whole time without using an uncomfortable kink in my wrists. My MTB levers are set up the same way, too, just a hair below 45 degrees from horizontal. With all the parts that can be easily moved around, I'd rather adjust the bike to fit me, not adjust myself to fit the bike.

Here's my hybrid. A 2000 GT Arette.

182828

A rack is going on it soon, followed by fenders. I'm trying to decide between Nitto Albatross and Mustache bars to replace the original bars on this bike.

And here's a question for y'all. Am I the only person riding a GT Arette on this forum? This is a great riding bike, extremely comfortable and smooth as glass to ride but GT quit making them and I've not seen another mention of them anywhere on this forum. Is there something wrong with this bike that I'm not aware of?

Hey I just picked up an Arette at a yard sale yesterday. I think they were only in production a few years, that's why there's not much about them. Mine is bright yellow and missing a stem. Definitely a "project bike".

In my mind, anything made by the "old" GT company is a good bike...:)

I like the tourer, John! I want to do some of that.

My bike with new derailleur cable and housing loop. Thanks Eric at REI for dialing in my bike. If I'd lubed that cable, it would have been fine I guess, but I didn't and it got a little bit oxidized. I installed an old Jandd Mountaineering Expedition rear rack and added some reflective stickers. In other words no changes since last time.

The apartment building painting is visible from the sidewalk, but as you can see it doesn't look like much from there. I don't think you can see it from the street. You need to be on foot or wandering to find to this place. A wonderful discovery which I wouldn't have made if I wasn't on my bike and with my camera. Never go anywhere without both!
