I love them! They really increase my speed if I stay down on them. However I need to build up my endurance because when I stay down on them for very long I lose my wind and legs.

I also noticed an dramatic increase in speed, Not just top speed but my average speed. Try readjusting your seat. Not just the height but the tilt. Areo bars put you in a dramatically different position. I also recommend a helmet mirror if you using Areo Bars.

I replaced the Trek 790 with a Specialized Tricross as a winter bike commuter/fun bike.
I consider the Tricross a hybrid as I don't believe it is a true cross bike. I like the Tricross
as I had never used drop bars in the winter time before.:)

Do the people that are participating in and winning cyclocross races on a Tricross know it's not really a cyclocross bike?

Snagged this about half an hour ago and it will be mine until I find it a new home... I have to avoid getting too attached to it because it's a Kuwahara and it's green.

http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikepics/sierragrande1.JPG

It's a 1985 Kuwahara Siera Grande that would have been considered and marketted as a mountain bike in it's day but it's touring / road heritage is plain to see.

With a 28/38/48 drive it was really set up for the road and light trails and I'll be getting it come slicker and narrower tires later today.

Green is my favourite colour and it even has a Terry saddle.

I am going to throw caution to the wind and use the bike for some short errands today as it's in perfectly rideable shape.

248809My 96 Marin San Rafael. I bought this originally because I thought that it would be a good "lock up downtown or at the train station" kind of bike, one that I wouldn't get too attached to if it were to be stolen. But over the years I've come to really appreciate what a great, all round commuter it is. Original except for BMX pedals, a Terry saddle ( hidden under a lycra cover to deter thieves) and a slight alteration to the length of the flat bars. I shortened them about 1 1/2 inches and added the ends. I keep the frame bag on there, the homage to the 90's Greg Lemond panniers and a Fat Tire Ale bottle opener...:)

Nice! I also have a Kuwahara Sierra that I bought brand new, I think, in 1988 or 1989 -- I saved up for a rew months to buy it (iirc I paid about $900 or so for it -- a good deal I got through a friend that owned a bike shop). It has a complete set of Deore components on it. I still have it and have been contemplating putting slicks on it and turning it into a hybrid -- it's still an exceptionally nice running bike.

WC - Sweet bike... I love lugs.

I know that the Shasta was a straight gauge frame in 1987 (a friend has one) but my '88 Shasta has an EX butted frame, has a hand built decal, and is far lighter than it's predecessors. I wonder if the later model Sierra also got an upgraded tubeset ?

I always like to be able to ad to my Kuwahara / Apollo lore.

My Sierra frame was built with Ishawata Quad-butted chromoly. The forks are Tange chromoly. The bike is fairly light (for it's day) and has really pleasant ride characteristics.

More pictures of the bike are posted here:

WC - Your Sierra is built to the same specs as my 1987 Kuwahara Cascade... does it have a handbuilt sticker on it as well ?

I am quite sure the Cascade became or offered a sloping top tube model in 1989... I have seen one and it was even lugged with an Ishiwata frame.

Yup, the hand built sticker with the thumbprint is there. I'm not very familiar with the Cascade model.

Nice....that didn't take long. I need to learn how to change tires.

I run my own bike shop and volunteer at our local bike co-op... teaching people how to repair flats and change tires is the first thing we teach people as it is the most common service issue there is.

I consider this to be a pretty essential skill for any bike owner / rider.

Those tires were a pain to get mounted but they really did improve the ride and the road speed of the bike...when tires get old and stiff they don't ride as nicely as they should even though they may look fine otherwise.

The tires I used are just inexpensive City Cavaliers... they are a little heavy and a pain to mount but they do roll well and are resistant to flats... and they only cost $7.00 each.

The reviews on them are also quite favourable... they aren't Schwalbe Marathons but few tires are.

MEC also sells tires for less than almost anyone.

Yes I have - that's where it came from. But be warned people - most of what they sell is trash that falls apart in your hands. I've heard nothing but complaints from people about their utter lack of quality-control. I figured they couldn't louse-up a spacer. Time will tell...

Yeah, I'm short. I'm like 5'3 with a 27.5 inch inseam. I'm on my tippy toes when I'm on the seat and have very little clearance when I'm over the top tube. This is a 15.5 inch frame also. Should I lower the handlebars more to be even withe the seat height?

As a former hybrid rider (I now have a recumbent) I was curious to see what's out there in hybrids. Nice selection of bikes, with one thing in common; ALL of them appear to be immaculately maintained. As a firm believer in doing my own maintenance and that a clean and well maintained bike "just works better" I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not the only 'clean fanatic' out there.

Kudos, folks, Y'all done good. bk
