Tandem Cycling - OMG! What do you do when the cap't has to fart?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

New to tandems. Got gas. What do you do? Is the a proper call out?

Successful tandem-ing is all about pleasing the stoker. This runs against that rule.

General rule is to hold it.
On something like a double century, that is kind of hard. I will try and wait until a rest stop, or fast downhill (wind), whichever comes up first. ;)

Yes, like many other tandem maneuvers, this is one that will eventually become intuitive to your team but needs to be called out and communicated when you're still new to tandems.
After a few months and miles of practice, your Stoker will learn to recognize the signs of the Captain's raising off the saddle, followed by a pause in cadence. That's her signal to get out of the drops and get her face into the fresh air as soon as possible.
Expect to be admonished by the Stoker anytime you do this on a group ride. You can alternate excuses of "it just snuck out while I was taking a butt break" or you can blame it on the dog, even if he's nowhere in sight, just like you do at home.

Correct.
Resist the urge unless you have a tailwind that's faster than your speed.
Tailwind? Wind from behind? Breeze from the rear?
Never mind.:innocent:

I simply state.. I am proud to claim that one! Then wait for the fun to begin, my wife is very creative with the pokes and smacks and little annoyances for the next few miles.
Just try not to make a habit of it!

No problemo, I am more than happy to share any and all of our tandem experiences that will benefit the rest of our small but enthusiastic community.
(Stoker Michele thought it was too true but pretty funny too.)
General rule is to hold it.
You should NEVER hold a fart. If you do, it travels up your spine and into your brain and this is how ****ty ideas are born.

Simple fix works for me all the time... run over that dead skunk in the road and let loose!!!

It's all the stoker's fault!
She should not fix gaseous meals (beans/chili again?) the night before a ride!!!
Hate to sound like a commercial, but here's always BEAN-O; take BEAN-O now, so there'll 'be no' gas later. . .

The reason pads in bike shorts were invented is to deflect the blast.
Is that ANSI approved?
Well, it looks like the stoker could fit a bike helmet over it... :D
.
Or you could start working on your Le Petomane imitations as a diversion.
What if there is a tailwind and the stoker cuts one? Is it STILL the captain's fault?????

I smile because I know that it's going to make my nagavator pedal harder.

Yes. Everything bad is the Captain's fault; all that is good stems from the Stoker.

Yet another advantage of hybrid-recumbents like the Pino or Viewpoint: superior gas-diffusion geometry.

Reg...good one
For us, being an aviation type household, I write it off as thrust helping to increase forward velocity.

Worse yet, what if you have leakage and shard your shamie....This can be disastorous on a century.

As the OP and a newbie to tandems, I think it's a very appropriate caveat! Heaven forbid!
Referring to the "What do you carry.." post currently running, I'm making a note to add diaper wipes to my wedge (no pun intened) immediately!
And from this day forward John shall be known as "straight pipes"...

This going to be almost as entertaining as a RV thread about "doing it" in the trailer...

Be really loud and yell at the stoker like he did it because he's 6 and fart jokes are still funny.

My stoker is 56 and SHE doesn't think farts or fart jokes are funny. NO SENSE OF HUMOR! Now when I get my 6 yr old grand son on there as stoker....
Perhaps off topic and not quite as funny as farts is the sneeze call out. I've found that "sneeze left" results in a sudden violent pitch of the bike to the right, something the captain should be prepared for prior to making such a call out.
