Dude at LBS sold me a Pedro's Campy BB Socket and cassette remover. He said it would work on my Shimano cassette. It was also the only on he had in stock. Well, you know why I'm posting. I can't get my cassette off. Of course, it doesn't help my learnign curve that I have zero confidence that I have the right tool.

there is a few diff styles of cassettes which requires a diff remover tool. i mean i dont know much about bikes but sounds like he sold you the wrong tool
Any chance you have a Uniglide and not a Hyperglide? They are totally different and you cannot remove a Uniglide with a Hyperglide tool. You can read up on it with Sheldon, per usual ...

This does not sound right to me. My Campy BB tool is much larger than my Shimano cassette tool. But I'm not familiar with some of the newer bottom brackets.
The tool must fit firmly into the lockring splines and not slip out while torquing the lockring. The lockring needs to be set with plenty of torque, specs are usually on the lockring. You can use a quick release skewer to hold the tool in the lockring so that it doesn't slip.
Shimano splines are deeper, and the raised part of the spline is wider. The outside diameters are about the same, and there is the same number of splines. Shimano tools will work on Campy lockrings, but not the reverse.
