Anyone know where I can find a site that tells me which Shimano groupset parts are compatible with each other? For example..if I want to install an Ultegra Sl compact crankset..will it work with my 105 bottom bracket? Do I need double shifters instead of my 105 triple shifters? I know that some Dura Ace components only work with Dura Ace...any help would be appreciated.
You need to offer more information.
Can we assume you now have a triple? A triple bottom bracket is too long for a double. The Bottom bracket needs to match the crankset, but does not necessarily need to be in the same group.
105 shifters are double/triple compatible. What is important is that they match the number of cassette cogs. How many do you have, this makes a big difference in compatibility. 10-speed Ultegra and D-A shifters are double or triple specific. In 9-speed the Ultegra shifters are double/triple compatible.
The shifters must match the cassette and the chain usually needs to match the cassette.
Pre 9-speed D-A shifters and rear derailleurs are not cross-compatible with other groups.

ok..I have 105 triple crankset, bottom bracket, brifters, front & rear deraillers, 12-27 cassette...10 speed group
I was thinking of going to a compact double...say Ultegra SL compact crank and was wondering what else I would need to swap out and what would be compatible..

Prolly just a new double FD, and drop it down a few mm, do you have a braze-on or clamp? I just got a R700 compact and it has so many ramps and pins you could probably still use a triple (I actually am still using mine) FD, and have it shift like butter.
The chain engages so effortlessly, it's pretty amazing. I thought it would be an issue (have a double Ultegra FD on order) but no.
BTW, not sure if you have decided on the Ultegra's yet, but my R700's were only 115 dollars shipped. They are pretty, and supposed to be somewhere around Ultegra, albeit a few grams heavier. The finish, is definitely up there (I would say close to DA).

All you need to swap is the cranks.
The BB cups are compatible.
The long cage rear derailer will work fine as will the triple front derailer.
You'll just need to move the front derailer down a bit.
I'd recommend saving your $$. The compact isn't going to give you anything you don't already have (except worse shifting).

my shifting is pretty fine right now..always has been...I think I might like the compact crank though...perhaps a 50/36 instead of a 50/34
Like it for what, it's looks?

like it because I almost never use my granny gear and I still would like to have some lower gears but on a double set up...

I think I'd have more use for a 50-36 where I ride. I can climb anything in my area with a 39/26 combination but often at a cadence that is too low for my old legs. I don't think I need a 34 and I like close ratios with lots of overlap. I think there would be times when a 50 is too big and a 34 maybe too small. I ride my 39 a lot more than my 53.
