Northern California - Ride Rating System (AKA we're all studs!)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This ride rating system (first saw it on the Crater Lake route description page) is even funnier considering the BRDAA was founded in California:

http://www.brdaa.org/Ride_Rating_System.htm

So, at least half the rides I've done this year end up in that "extremely difficult" class, at least from a climbing perspective. See? we're all much better/tougher/fillinyourownadjectiveshere cyclists than we thought!

I saw that and thought "I must be very studly!"
Then i figured out that they just have a lame rating system.

You know the system is flawed when I'm considered a badass.

My single speed after-work climb yesterday is squarely in EXTREMELY DIFFICULT climbing range...

Huh. I mean, it felt hard, but I only had 1 gear!

I think it would be a challenge to find a ride in the Bay Area that is 40-60 miles, and only 1000-2000 feet climbing!

Cool. So according to this system, I can be a legend in my own mind!

My last ride was 63 miles with 4500 ft of climbing.
From now on please refer to me as Kal-El.

What if my commute is in the Children's ride distance, but easy to moderate climbing??? lol

I don't even know how you could do a century here with 3000 feet of climbing.

????

ETA - Oh wait - I get it now. The ratings make sense because it is "extremely difficult" to FIND a century with that little climbing here.

According to that scale, my last tour was extremely difficult. I did have one day I climbed over 5000' in the first 40 miles, then descended moslty for the next 63 miles. It was a tough climb (Mt Hood Highway, OR-35).

I'm a little confused how the scale works. If I do > 3000' in under 10 miles, is that an extremely difficult children's ride? :p

Sure. A children's ride up the backside of Mt. Hamilton. Because kids love the observatory, but they gotta be tough to get there.

Ride around the south end of the bay using the Dumbarton.

Heck, the ride I did on Monday had 6000 feet of climbing in the first 29 miles. How do I rank that?

I think my ride ranking system is more useful for people who ride actual long rides... :)
