General Cycling Discussion - Hi everyone, looking to buy a hybrid bike

Hey, first time bike buyer here! I am going to be using my bike to ride to school and maybe take it to the beach for some exercise. I was looking at this bike here --

Did you research this bike through schwinn's site?

If its not there, don't get it, especially when you can get a cutter for like $330.

~300 will get you a decent new bike from a bike store. I'd go there first, test ride a few, and go from there. They'll discuss features, needs, and other mess if they're a good shop.

Hey guys I found a trek 7500 for $450 off craigslist. Is that a good deal? I'm asking for higher res images, what should I look for when trying to find faults?

For $439, you can get a new Trek 7.1 FX. $499 takes a new 7.2 FX.

The 7500 you found may be a good deal as that's 1/2 the new-bike price. But I won't say as condition and year are unknown so far. Got a link to the ad?

Original price was $650? That's years old - despite the seller's "Little old lady from Pasadena" routine. And wanting $450 for a $650 bike is waaaaaaay high. I'd pass.

Also those wheels bite with their radial front and 24-spoke rear. So you'd want to find new wheels after those fell apart. And I'd wonder about re-doing the suspension. Did you want suspension?

Yeah suspension would be nice, I never tried it but I can imagine myself being very comfortable on one lol.

I would grab that quick at that price I hope he didn't pay $699 for that new, I have never seen 1 go for more than 499 new. Maybe he had stuff done to it. Ask questions about how it has been tweeked

I just read the ad - what a crock! $699 new?? Outright lie. Avoid.

Note: Looks to be a women's model. And the paint color is very odd - for a Trek.

Ok I contacted the person with the 7.2 trek and she said she sold it for $500! Anyways now I'm looking at this trek 7.1 for $350, user says he rode it only for 5-10 miles.

If you buy a new bike, you get a warranty that would leave any such cost saving's in the weeds.

So I should buy a new bike and get warranty? Why do people recommend buying used then, not questioning your judgment just wondering. Also what is a fixie hah.

Buying used is a cash-in-hand savings. Buying new is insurance that if something goes wrong - you won't have to pay for the repair. And get this - the frame will be, on some models like Trek, covered for the life of the original owner. There was a thread a little while back where someone's 6 year old Trek's rear stay had broken. The question was will Trek honor the lifetime-frame warranty?

Hmmm.. life time warranty sounds too good to pass up. I am a student and probably won't be able to afford an upgrade any time soon. Man... I was going into this for a good used price but now it seems I have to dish out a few extra 100's for a new one.

The lifetime warranty is for the frame only. Components are usually warrantied for 6 months to 1 years against poor workmanship. Be sure to read the paperwork.
