Bicycle Mechanics - A few Q's - buying parts for homegrown xtracycle.

Hi all - its payday so its time to buy some parts for my xtracycle build.
Brakes - will Avid FR5 levers work with both V brakes and Canti-levers?
Chain - Drive train is a 7 speed rear cassette with triple biopace rings up front. The biopace rings say "Use Narrow chain only" on a little label. Will the 7/8 speed shimano HG70 chain(s) work for this? Is there a cheaper alternative since this isn't a brand new drive train?
Thanks guys. :)

brakes -will work only with v-brakes.the chain will work for you.
V-brakes and (traditional) cantilevers require different pull ratios. No lever will provide both.
Any HG 6/7/8-speed chain will work. Yes there are cheaper alternatives.
Measure your old chain. If it's way worn, you might not want to change it unless you can afford a new rear cluster at the same time. New chain + worn cluster = bad juju.
If at some point in the future you want to upgrade/replace the Biopace crankset or rings, remember that they may have substantial value on eBay. People want them.

I'm building a home brew xtracycle (thread is here: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=564180). So I need two chains, thus why I'm not reusing the original. (Also none of the cassette rings look terribly worn, nor do the biopace ones) But I picked up two SRAM 6/7/8 speed chains @ the LBS @ lunch, for $18/each.
After work its a trip to REI for new brakes. OEM parts are chincy plastic 200GS levers, and I need to run a V-brake in the back. Thinking I might as well upgrade the front to V's as well, since I don't really want mis-matching levers.
I actually am rather happy to have the Biopace rings. Scored the bike @ a thrift store for $12 just because of those. Won't get rid of them unless I absolutley end up hating them. :)
Upgrade? Some people might argue with that choice of wording.
Why do you need a V-brake in the rear? Just about any cantilever will mount to those posts. (V-brakes are cantilevers, which is why one uses the term "traditional cantilever" to distinguish from V-brake.)

The rear FS triangle I'm using doesn't have a cable stop point centered to use cantis. It does however have the a side mount cable stop to run V brakes. Figured I'd work with what was on the frame. Also meant upgrade in the terms of new brakes, vs the 1996 shimano cantis with aged pads. :)
Changing to V's in the front would only be so I don't need mis-matched levers.
