Here's some practical advice that I'm finally taking myself.
Don't to anything till you arrive at your destination.
The other day, I arrived at the library. About 30 feet from my destination, I began to unclip and put my cleat covers on. A car started to back out and I was pretty far from the brakes.
In another incident, I began to turn off my lights whereas I was already in my neighborhood. Not really a "close call", but not a good event either.
Don't worry about saving that 30 seconds of battery life or 15 seconds of time. Wait till you're there.
