I just got a pair of ST-5600 shifter/ brakes on CL. My existing set up is Shimano Ultegra double crank up front with Dura Ace FD-7403. Rear is Ultegra RD-6500 and 9 speed Sram cassette with Shimano 9 speed bar end shifters.
It all works great and I set it up myself from scratch.
Will the 5600 brifters work with my existing hardware and if so do I need to do anything special since it's a 10 speed shifter w/ 9 speed gears?
Thanks and I couldn't find this exact question answered. Sorry.

Should work.

No. You'll need a 10-speed Shimano compatible cassette and 10-speed chain to go with your 10-speed 105 shifters.

Al you sound a lot more sure about it than DMF. So there is no way the shifter will just shift 9 gears instead of 10? Won't it just stop at 9?
I have never used brifters so a noob I am.

The indexing is different between the shifters. In other words, the 9 speed shifters move the rear derailer a greater distance than the 10 speed shifter. They are not compatible.

yeah..i dont think that will work. The pull is different for 9 and 10 shimano. There might be a jtek engineering shiftmate device that you can buy to make it work???

As long as your rear derailleur isn't a dura ace 7400 (or pre 1997), you should be ok. Although I dont know about your front derailleur. I would imagine that it doesn't matter.
