Road Bike Racing - Young Racers

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi I have been cycling for about a year now... Im 15. I just finished an 8 day tour that was 640 miles, I did 400... 50-70 a day.. I have mostly been doing local tours ect ect.. But I would really like to get into racing.. I was thinking about the duathlons, because I haven't swam in ages and its just not my thing.. Anyway are there many 15 year olds out there that race, or will I be the only one in my age group..? Also a question to any age racer... I have a Jamis Quest weighs about 20lbs, with spinergy Rev-X's, a 105 tripple and a Selle saddle, is this bike fit for racing? Thanks..

You'll find racers in your age group. You'll register in Juniors. It depends where you are. Bigger city crits you'll get a decent field size. Most of the races I go to have at least 5 - 10 in juniors. imo that bike would be fine for racing. If you really get into it you'll decide later what you should do. Good luck and I hope you stic with it. It certainly is one of the funnest things I've ever done...

My son just joined a local racing team and in your age group there should be plenty of competition. As for your bike, you'll be starting off better than my son's sora equipted bike. If you register as a junior with USCF there will be gear restrictions so you might have to buy another cassette. Good luck.
What is USCF? If that was the case I'd have to get into another catagory because Im not changing my cassette, I mean its a tripple 27 gears.. How much lower could it go..?

USCF is the "United States Cycling Federation" and is part of the USA cycling organization. They are the governing body of development road/track racing in the US, most races follow thier rules. Depending on where you live/race you may not have to change your gears because some regions allow you to lock out gears but this is not the case for national events/races. The purpose of this is to encourage good cycle development for younger riders. There are many young cyclist that push too high a gear and develop bad habits or worse, injury.
