Bicycle Mechanics - 23.4 seatpost where to find micro position alloy seat post

ok i bought a Peugot course and i want to replace the steel seat post what can I do? the diameter is 23.4

would it be ok to give it to a machinist and have him reduce the diameter on a lathe? I am thinking of a Sakae seat post

Brush up on your French and try eBay France or other french online sources. Getting ANYTHING in an obscure size is hard enough let alone being fussy.

Is there a shim in your seat tube? A lot of Peugeots have them.

got a 25.4 thompson many moons ago, not sure if they are still doing custom though.

Actually using a 22.2mm seatpost and a 1.2mm thick shim is probably your best bet. I have seen alloy one piece seatposts in 22.2mm although now I think about it I'm not sure if they were micro adjustable.

The reason I asked about the shim is because One of my Peugeots takes a 25.4 without the shim and I have a nice Sakae in that size to get rid of. I just replaced it with a nicer Simplex.

that Sakae is exactly what i had in mind. my question is can a good machinist turn it down to fit, of course only the part in the seat tube needs to be reduced so perhaps it is doable, is that a word? I am in Hot Springs Arkansas. email alindquist@earthlink.net

That Sakae seatpost isn't micro adjustable. If that style of seatpost is suitable then get one in a 22.2mm size and shim up to the 23.4mm size.

Apparently neither do I. The seatpost in the photo seems to be a Laprade-type where the adjustment is controlled by a series of matching splines on the seatpost and the saddle clamp and the tilt is adjustable only in increments.

To me a micro-adjustable seatpost has the tilt controlled by two opposing bolts or by an adjusting bolt and a lock bolt like the American Classic posts and these allow infinite adjustment steps.

OK, I had better correct myself for the record. To shim up from 22.2mm to a 23.4mm size you need a 0.6mm thick shim. The total differences is 1.2mm but being a circle you need a shim of half the thickness. You probably knew that but I thought that I had better correct the record.

I went looking and the only 22.2 I found was steel and not what I had in mind, my trek antelope has a 26.8 I am going to look into machinists.Have them reduce its diameter then put in a steel liner that fits its inside diameter for strength. I just want it to look good.

There were a few alloy posts with integrated clamps in 22.2mm floating around on eBay not that long ago. That's the way it goes though. If you don't grab them when they're around they've disappeared when you want them.]

Have you tried your LBS yet? Last time i checked you could order pretty much every size from kalloy.

If you are really serious about getting rid of it why not sell it to me?, I saw one on ebay but since it was in the UK I figure the shipping would be too much there was also one on Craigs list for ten dollars but I missed it. Let me know what u want to do. Allen

Allen, I'm not sure who you are referring too. I bought myself a plain chrome-molly 22.2mm post for one of my bikes but I was looking at the integrated alloy models. Postage from the UK is usually VERY good to Australia. Its much better than the postage costs from the USA to Austalia so you should ask the seller for a quote.
