View Full Version : Stung by yellow jacket

I'm riding home Wednesday night, minding my own business, when out of no where I feel this sharp pain on my ankle. I look down and there is this yellow jacket jabbing away. The problem is that I'm on my fixed gear spinning away at 90 rpm and having a real hard time brushing him off. Here I am weaving all over the MUP so bad an on coming jogger cleared off the path to get out of the way.

I get home and it stings a bit and only a little inflamed, so I ice it down right way. I wake up the next morning it is swollen pretty good, but I have a bunch of house painting to do, so I wrap it in an bandage and work all day.

Here it is Friday and the ankle is still swollen pretty good. Enough to keep me off the bike :notamused: I drove in, took a Loratadine, and icing away. I've got more painting tomorrow. :bang:

Stupid bug.

Consult a doctor.

And Benadryl is your friend.

Consult a doctor.

Its only a localized allergic reaction and it doesn't really hurt, I just stayed off the bike to allow it to heal. The antihistamine and the ice seem to be doing the trick. These things typically run their course in a couple of days. I think I just aggravated it by being on my feet for 12 hours yesterday. You know the drill, I don't have time for this right now.

Loratadine (The Non-Sedating Antihistamine!) is safer to use than dyphenhydramine (Benadryl) if you will be climbing ladders to paint.
If it makes you feel any better, I insecticided a yellow jacket nest in a blue spruce in my backyard yesterday.

I would rather be stung by a yellow jacket than beaten by a Browncoat!

Was stopping not an option you considered?

Bastards usually fly down my jersey and whack me a half dozen times before I manage to goosh them. Luckily they don't bother me much, just a little quarter-sized red patch that goes away in an hour or so.

noisebeam - It happened pretty quick, I took several whacks at it and finally got it off. In retrospect, yes stopping, or even unclipping that foot, perhaps would have been better.

Yes JanMM, that does make feel better. I consider going back to the scene and finding that little bugger.

SirrusRider - A couple years back, something flew or crawled up my cargo shorts and got me on the back of the thigh pretty good. Now that is getting close.

Loratadine / dyphenhydramine - If I need it I'll try the dyphenhydramine (Benydryl) before bed.

I took one in the neck on Wednesday. The littler buggers must have organized a protest against cyclists. I thought it flew down my jersey as I was about 1/2 unzipped. Luckily it must have just bounced off my neck after stinging me. Left a nice big welt about the size of a half dollar and the neck muscles in the area were sore until this morning. The worst of it was that I happened to be driving down main street with a ton of traffic around me!

Something like this is very frightening to me. I haven't been stung by a bee in at least decade but from what I remember I swell up pretty badly. If I got stuck in the neck I would be heading to the nearest clinic or hospital asap!

I got one of them (or a wasp, something like that) on a motorcycle once. Going 50 or 55 mph it smacked me right in the collar of my jacket and then fell down over my shoulder and down my back. Stung me 4 or 5 times on the way down. Had a friend riding on the back. first thing I did, of course, was slam on the brake. With each sting I'd jerk and yell (Oowww!). When I got that thing stopped my friend was the first one off the bike. He had been afraid that I was going postal at road speed. It didn't help that I was still yelling and cursing as I was ripping off my jacket. Never did find what stung me. But it was probably as good as dead after the collision. He only had enough life left to make it really miserable for me.

I usually don't mind most wasps and bees. Though capable of giving a painful sting, they're mostly well behaved and not looking for trouble. But those yellow jackets are the most vicious scum, short of Al Quaida, that I've ever come across.

When I perceive one of their nests in my yard or near, it's immediate war. There is no living with those things.

Oh, that brought back bad memories. Got a hornet down the left sleeve at about 60 on a motorcycle. I had to have set a record getting the bike stopped and shirt off. Got me like 6 times.

Ouch! Sorry that happened to you guys. I've never been stung by a bee or a yellow jacket but I've been bitten by bugs a ton of times... Just a few days ago I was wearing a dress during a picnic sitting on a blanket in the grass. I got bit on the butt-cheek!

Actally, it's okay. Memories like that are good for a chuckle if they're distant enough.

But parts of a bee under the contact lens......that's a true bummer!

yeah bees rot. I got stung while riding and was lucky to swat it before betting any venom, but the sting was still a painful nuisance for over a week.

I got stung by a bee at the outset of a 40 mile ride last weekend. He zoomed right up into my crotch and stung my inner thigh too close to my junk for comfort.
