First ride of the season. 5 miles around the neighborhood. Just a short shakedown ride after I had cleaned the drive train and adjusted the brakes and gear. Everything but the bike computer is working well.

Thanks. Doctor was surprised when I told him that I had, indeed only run short errands. He gave permission to ride now though. This was my first ride of any distance. Luckily I had limited time to spend. If I had all day, I would have gone farther. I was hurting by the time I got home... Glad I didn't try a longer ride. Fought a strong head wind in the final miles.

Another attempt at a dirt road. It mostly went okay, but hit a patch of soft sand near the end and had to walk the bike for 1/4 mile. :o

I spend most of my time riding around in the Urban Core, so it always seems strange to ride in the country. I unexpectedly got chased by 8 dogs at various times. The last one was a mean pit bull who looked like he chewed through his leash to escape.

Most to all of our snow was gone 2 weeks ago and then we got 7 inches in one night a week ago. This is about what it's been reduced to so i've been able to get out on the bike the last 2 days :)

We usually get a decent amount but this was the most snowfall we have had since 1974... visited this site again yesterday to have a winter picnic and cookout and we hauled everything in and out by bike.
Guessed I had about 70 pounds of gear on the bike yesterday... :)

196018196019We´ve done some commuting the last weeks, but the weekends has been obstructed by snow. But finally a weekend with decent greyish early spring weather! Light drizzle, mild winds and car free countryside roads around my hometown, suitable for a hybrid mission!

Twenty-mile round trip to Fermilab smack in the face of a 18 mph headwind that kicked my butt on the leg out, but had the luxury of a nice tail wind on the return leg. Had a few roadies pass me on the way out in the headwind with their low aero profile. A bit of a disadvantage in the more upright position on the hybrid. Great workout!

You should have used them to your advantage by tucking in behind them and drafting.

Today I rode out to watch "De Ronde van Vlaanderen" in real life.
I rode to the top of "De Bosberg" using the forestpaths to climb up and thus avoiding al the traffic jams.

On the trip back I was passed by a scooter going a steady 28 mph ... I started slipstreaming them and managed to stay at their tale for about 3 miles ... they even looked around and were pleasantly surprised ... I may have been aided into slipstreaming them by the fact that the girl on the back was very lovely :D

Worked on my Moulden today adding a few more chain rings and some 8 speed bar ends... the bike really is a hybrid in the most technical sense of the word as the parts have come from everywhere.
Beautiful day here in Canuckistan and just came back from a short ride as I wanted to make sure things were dialed in and think I will head out for my daily 20 pretty soon and enjoy what is left of the the day before things start freezing up tonight.
It was a pretty nice weekend here in The Land Beyond O'Hare. I am trying to get ready to ride a century the first Sunday in June. The ten week training schedule I have said to ride 20 miles yesterday and rest today. I did 27 yesterday and because the weather was so nice 15 today (I can rest tomorrow!). First time outside this year and that was nice, too nice to use today as a rest day. The rides were pretty mundane trips north and then south on the bike trail near me. As usual for spring the horse hooves are cutting the limestone far north section of the trail into a very reasonable facsimile of cobblestones. Where it isn't cut up the trail is soft which is why the horses do a number on it this time of year. It's all part of the ride though and did not spoil yesterday's outing. Today's ride south found no problems with the trail. Just a little south of my home I did ride into a wall of warm air, a very sharp warm front that was in the process of slipping south of us and letting in the thunderstorms that are banging outside as I type this now. These are out and back rides so on the return I ran into the same wall, a cold front this time, about a mile south of where it had been earlier. I'm sure I have hit them before, just never as sharply defined as today's front was. About a mile before I reached the southern turnaround I came upon a deer standing no more than 4 feet off the trail. I came to a clearing in the scrub brush that lined the trail on my right and suddenly there was a deer. Only it was not moving, not a muscle. So, I thought it must just be a yard ornament and I looked it over carefully as I rolled closer and closer. Wow! what a well made yard sculpture, it even looks like it has fur! Then it twitched!! Suddenly I realized that it could be unpleasant indeed if that deer decided to dart in front of me at that point. But that is all it did, it twitched once and then become stock still again. That deer must have had nerves of steel to stand so still, so close, as I rolled by obviously watching it very intently. I rode about a mile further, turned around, and when I passed that spot the second time there was no sign of that yard ornament.
It's good to be on the road again,
Ken

It's cherry blossom time in DC, so I did my yearly cherry blossom ride.
Hit the major blossom viewing areas - Tidal Basin, Hains Point, Capitol Hill, National Arboretum, Takoma Park, Sligo Creek, Forest Glen and Kenwood (the last one is the best)
Got a flat tire in the last mile, so I walked back. Will fix the tire later this week.

I was off work today so I decided to do a test run for commuting. I know going to work on your day off is crazy. Somehow I turned a 9 mi round trip into 19 mi. I bonked way too far from home. I guess low carbs and cycling don't mix. I will get the balance with some practice.

It was originally scheduled for two weeks ago...the day is snowed. Postponed at the last minute and rescheduled.
If the government shutdown had happened, it would have been canceled altogether.
I could see some of the big kites from the other side of the river
Looked like there were several hundred kites in the air at any given time.
The multi-color one with two tails in the picture was about 12 feet across. I watched them launch it and after 10 minutes it had climbed really high.
