No pics!? Didn't happen. You know the scoop.
I know, I know...we were half way up here with bikes loaded in rack & we each thought each other packed the camera....so I took all blame :)

Today I went back to the Great Confluence Trail, but instead of heading north to Alton, IL, I went south to Hartford, IL.

On the way to and from the trail, I tend to prefer the side roads to main streets, both to avoid traffic, and because the side streets tend to be so durned purty! ;)

Absolutely, I ride the back roads whenever possible; scenic, safer, quieter. Great pics.

Well I can sort of walk now (with a bad limp because I cannot fully articulate my ankle yet) without any pain. Because of that and the fact that I have been riding my trainer for an hour a day for the past 4 days (at a high cadence), I decided that I would try to go out for a ride today. I planned on riding 10 miles if I was able to get started (I lead with my right foot from standing stops, and that's the one I sprained). I ended up riding 15 at a good pace (just shy of 17mph), including a couple of moderate climbs. The only pain I had was when riding over bumpy roads after the 10 mile mark. Other than that, it sure was nice to get my bike out of the basement and go for a ride. It was a little hot for my liking (92), but I got over it.

Similar temperatures here in NYC, with a fair amount of humidity. Similar mileage too, 15.62 miles.
I had not rode in almost 2 weeks healing the worst saddle sore I've ever experienced.
I went out hoping to get some photos of "Manhattanhenge", but the cloud cover was too thick to get shots of the "finale".
I did manage a few nice panoramic pics from the Triboro Bridge.

Thanks jbc, I rode with 2 chamois yesterday to see what that was like. I think it makes a difference.
I was recently reading up on ways to improve the chest mount footage and I'm looking forward to testing it out.
It's cooler today but I am reading about air quality warnings and wonder if maybe I was feeling this yesterday. "....limit prolonged strenuous outdoor activity....", "....ground level ozone air quality index over 100....".
I thought the humidity was oppressive enough, but sucking smog is just insult to injury.
Positively Orwellian.

Drove up to Angaston a small town settled by German pioneers in the mid 1800's. I was high in the Barossa Valley ranges were there's more rolling hills instead the steep rides recently. I found myself on a local road race course by accident "I think I could have taken them on my hybrid" joking. Then watched a few stragglers finish the 24 hour Reliability Trial but didn't stay long.

Thanks guys! We pretty much had the trails to ourselves except for the wildlife. We heard red tail hawks and ospreys all during the ride. It started raining and as we were hurrying back to the truck we came up on a big wild turkey! That Red Hills sign made me think it was cut to look like a fox. They have a big equestrian event every year. This past March was really big since the winners had a chance to compete at the Olympics in London.

One of my favorite little stretches in City Park in New Orleans, LA. This is from this morning but it's also a nice shaded ride in the evening under the big oaks. I prefer it in the morning as no one else is on the road. Just sucks that the humidity is usually 94-97% that early in the morning.

Went for a ride between rain storms to fine tune the gears and brakes. I will be going on some longer rides along the coast in August and need to find any problems and wear in the new cables, etc while I am closer to home.
Thought about standing the bike with the pedal on the concrete curb, but knowing my luck the bike would have ended up in the bay. The coast guard ship docks here so it would be fairly deep.
http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g361/crawfordvj/Trek%20FX%207100/tug.jpg
The cruise ship is the Costa Victoria. I imagined that I was in Hawaii taking this photo from my balcony instead of standing in the rain on an overpass with the bike's chain jammed between the freewheel and spokes.
http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g361/crawfordvj/Trek%20FX%207100/costa-victoria.jpg
One part of the chain twisted sideways into the gap under the freewheel and the hub, and another part caught under a rivet and wedged against the spokes. I eventually worked it out with a screwdriver without damaging anything and went home through the city after looking at the water lily ponds.
The bike is a Trek FX 7100.

I recently got back from a 34 mile ride. It was my first longer ride since I sprained my ankle, and it went well. There was one section of my route that was blocked off for road construction that was a pain, though. The detour took me on an incredibly busy 45mh speed limit (cars traveling 50-55mph) 5 lane road--the road where there are two malls, 4 McDonalds restaurants and 2 of everything else within 4 miles, etc. The detour took me about 2 miles, but I was able to sustain 25mph (using my drop bar ends) and took the right lane. Thankfully I didn't have any issues, but I don't know if it's something that I will do again. I'm normally not one to be timid when it comes to street riding, but that 2 miles as something else!
Anyway, the ride was great overall. The fiancee and I are planning on going out for a ride tomorrow, as well. It sure is nice to be back on the bike!

Just got back from a 15 mile ride on the Bay Trail. I also hit the fastest speed I have ever hit on the flats - 27mph. I was able to sustain it for quite a bit too, but then I saw a family of 4 on the MUP and slowed down. My first real bike rocks :D

Crawfordvj, what bike is that? and what tires?
@Igo The bike is a Trek FX 7100 with the paint and anodized parts stripped and polished. The front tyre is a Tioga 28c. Can't read or find the model on the side. I replaced one tyre because it had small splits on the tread where the rubber had perished , with a 35c Vittoria Randonneur Cross. Will do the same with the front when that one wears out.
More pics of the bike are near the bottom of this page (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/573248-Post-pictures-of-your-Hybrid?p=14449294&highlight=#post14449294) in the "Photos of your Hybrid" thread.

I have always had a kid like fascination with approaching metropolitan skylines, much like a kid has a fascination with airplanes. Tho I spend very little time vacationing in cities, I pay as much attention to where and how other people live as much as I can in passing. I love your trails but show my your rivers, parks and skyline too. You had a picture of fallen rock. It just left a great taste for wanting to see the rest of the park.
What I find bizarre about some of these videos is that with such a huge population density, the trails aren't anymore crowded than they are. It's the same way here, I mean, it's not as densely populated but often times our very well groomed trails are virtually empty.... thank goodness...I get them all to myself.
Keep up the good work.
I also have to ask, How are you able to pick up your voice on these videos so effortlessly? And how do you do it without picking up wind noise?
I am a still photographer but video is new to me. I have two Contour HD cameras and I've had a lot of fun with them but it is nearly impossible to narrate while under way.
One last thing, how are you shooting the panoramics? Stitching hardware in a camera? What camera? I've been shooting panos for years but they tale very careful planning and great effort. This is something I can't do from my bicycle as it requires a tripod and dSLR cameras and remote shutter releases.

Thanks for watching Igo.
I tend to pick less populated trails to ride on, if you ride on the West side bike path it's often much more crowded.
I use an external lapel microphone plugged into my GoPro Hero 2, it has a windjammer (a furry ball that goes around the microphone to block wind noise) and is mounted in a hole in my helmet, therefore it picks up my voice quite well.
I recently bought a Droid Razor Maxx which stitches panoramic pictures together automatically.
Modern technology has reduced camera gear into very small components indeed!

I now have 3 HiDef video cameras and none have external microphone jacks. I can't believe I didn't get a camera equipped that way. I even have a very nice external mic from my old tape video cam.
I picked up the new Galaxy S3 phone a couple weeks ago. I makes panos easy but they just don't compare to the dSLR/tripod method. It does a wonderful job for what it is though.
Here's a hi tec pano i did a couple years ago. I can't wait 'til it cools down enough to give this new Samsung a try out on the trails.

262937Glorious summer in New England weather has returned & I'm out there every day again. Today's ride was to & around Lake Holbrook for an easy pleasant 11 miles. It could have been longer if I got lost in the Grove as it's called. It's a small lake surrounded with modest homes (converted summer cottages) and some newer houses all on tiny lots with narrow roads that go everywhere but out.
I miss summers like that. I have to look forward to winter to get summers like that. LOL.

I got away from my normal routine this morning (15 mile route that I usually do on weekdays) and went for a 23 mile ride. I worked in a lot of off-trail riding (almost 10 miles worth). All I could think of was what my fiancee is missing out on by sticking to the paved trails. Hopefully I can convince her to give it a shot soon!
At any rate, I even took a couple of pictures this time. I haven't taken many because I never have my camera with me, so I have to use my cell phone's camera. The good news is that I have ordered a large top tube bag that should be able to hold my camera, snacks, etc. I'm really looking forward to getting that in the mail!

went for a group ride this morning that started at 5:30 which was billed as a 25 mile round trip ride. It kicked my butt the last 5 or so miles, I haven't hardly ridden in over 6 months and boy did it show. This was the first time in a long time that I wished for red lights in the last part of a ride and I didn't get any:cry:. When I got to the truck and loaded my bike the rear tire felt very soft but didn't think anything about it, when I got home and unloaded the bike the rear tire was flat. I'm blaming the exhausting last 5 or so miles on my rear tire being low on air:thumb: and not me being out of condition:rolleyes:.
