Hi, I have a 21 speed with 3 cogs on the front gear shifter, but even though I keep changing the adjuster next to the gripshift I can't seem to get the gears to change from 1 - 2 - 3 and back down 3 - 2 - 1. Any ideas of what I need to do? Do the max / minimum set screws need to be adjusted or something?
They're shimano gears.
Sorry I don't know what technical words to use!

Cheers,
Paul Thompson

I'm thinking that you need to take your bike to a shop. There's lots of different Grip Shift shifters, and they all work just a little bit differently. I'm thinking yours has a little internal spring displaced or lost, maybe the handlebar mount is broken.

One thing I can tell you for sure is that, if it ever worked right, fiddling with the limit screws on the derailleur is the wrong thing to do.

Ok, not 100% it has ever worked perfectly as I bought it 2nd hand and has been working on and off since then. Sometimes it is fine moving up and down and sometimes it just doesn't want to go...

I have a bianchi perrigrine that worked fine last year when I hung it on the garage ceiling and then the front wouldn't shift when I took it down for spring. Who knows? I bought a NOS replacement set of brake/shifters (Deore DX I think)- replaced just the shifter and now perfect. Moral of story is have the bike checked out at a shop as a component may have gone south. Apparently many components are not servicable! This is why I like the old friction shifters!
