After some sluggish, short rides recently, I needed to prove that my 46 year-old legs still had some oomph in them. So I got on the bike this morning and headed east, along a route I've used many times from Syosset to Port Jefferson. I think it's about thirty miles. 'Best ride I've done in a while.
The thing I noticed this time, though, is that a short segment of the badly crumbling road shoulder that has been marked as "Bike Rt. 25" for a few years now has the international bike lane symbol painted on the pavement. This section is somewhere around Kings Park.
I wonder if this is a sign that the rest of the so-called bike route is soon to be resurfaced, widened, and whatever else needs to be done. I'll tell you, I'm glad I re-installed my mountain bike tires before this trip, 'cuz this is no ride for slicks. Between the potholes and the debris all over the side of the road, this was almost as hard on the bike as riding the Greenbelt.
Anyway, my route uses Pulaski Road most of the way and only tickles 25A in bits and pieces. If anybody wants a cue sheet, let me know. I'd suggest making this part of a multi-day trip that includes a ferry from Pt. Jeff to Bridgeport and then a ride up the Connecticut coast. Even just a round trip on the ferry adds another level of enjoyment.
