Classic & Vintage - Seat post - too short?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I recently got a vintage 25.0 mm 3ttt seatpost for my Vitus frame. It's nice, but surprisingly short, with only about 6 cm enclosed in the seat tube when adjusted to optimum height. Is this enough?

6 cm should go past the lug. If so, I'd say it's enough.

My Vitus 979 came with an Ajax seat post that wouldn't go low enough for me. I cut 4cm off the bottom with a tube cutter and now it's perfect. Does anyone know why the seat post bottoms out on the seat tube like this? Is there some kind of step inside the frame?

Depending on the bike, seat tubes do get reamed. Almost always on better bikes. Not always deeply enough to allow much adjustment range. Usually the reaming just cleans it up a bit, but it's enough to not get the post past that point.

Thanks Ronsonic, that makes perfect sense. I worried because the part I removed was slightly tapered but it's been fine for 5 years now so must be seating OK in the seat tube.
