Hey all,
The fork on my old school, Specialized FSR Ground control 98', went kaput. It was a Rock Shox Judy XL 100mm. I was wondering on what I should look for in getting a new fork. Do I need to get another 100mm travel fork or can I get a longer one with out it messing up the geometry too much? Right now I'm looking at a 2005 Manitou Minute 3 with 130mm travel. Would that fit and are there other factors I need to be looking at when choosing a fork?

Rule of thumb...... You can add 20 mm with out messing up geometry too much. now another part of the equation and more importantly is the Axle to crown measurement. That determines how much the bike geo is really affected

I switched out my rigid fork for a manitou with 80 mm. Do you know the height difference between the two? Not sure if I gave you enough information or not.

The axle-to-crown on the manitou is going to completely mess up your geometry. They're really long and the extra 30mm won't help.

Make sure the steerer tube is long enough.

So the Axel to Crown measurement for the Manitu fork is 3 inches longer. I'm guessing that is too much. The problem being that it would cause different stresses in my frame and make it brake faster? I'm still really new to the down hill, and any technical bike stuff in general. Would 3 inches more from the fork make the bike ride a lot differently?

Also, is it important to keep the amount of travel the same for the front and back? Would it just be a crazy idea to get a 7 inch travel fork (that is 4.5 inches longer crown to axle the the original fork) with the 4.25" travel rear? Would that just completely jack up everything?

Did You look that up somewhere? 3 inches????? I don't buy that, I think we should re check that figure.
