My wife and I took a little drive around the backroads here in WI the other day and I saw a new alarming trend in gardening - using nice old bikes as planters! Gardening is somewhat prone to fads, and this must be the new thing. Take a decent old bike that has been hanging in the barn for 20 years, and put a basket on the front and put a bunch of plants in there. Put it in the front yard, or up against a tree, and instant landscaping!

As yard ornaments go, they don't look too bad, but I hate to see old cool bikes rotting away like that! Most look like they are road ready, but won't be after sitting out like this.

OK, I'm feeling better now!

Its true. I saw a girls elgin that was rusted beyond repair go for 200 bucks on ebay. Burns me up to know that some of the bikes I have restored would be worth more if I had just dumped them in the ocean for a time.

So, I see this as new purchasing opportunities: find a bike in a yard you want and offer them $25.00..they can keep the flora! New derivation of the term "yard sale" !
