I am looking at a 2004 Burley Tosa that is in pretty good shape. The MSRP on a new one is $2400. How does one evaluate what a used one is worth to make an offer? Can anyone let me know what they paid for a similar used bike.

Thanks,

The value of a bike is whatever the seller and buyer agree upon.

For a single bike in excellent condition, I'd guess half MSRP might be a good starting position. For a 5 year old bike I certainly wouldn't pay any more than that. Tandems are harder because shipping becomes big factor for anything but a local sale. I'd show up at the guy's house with a vehicle that will transport the bike and fan out 8 $100 bills in front of the seller.

Try searching ebay and the bike section of craigslists in various major cities. If you can get 5 hits for that or similar models, that will help. But I like Retro idea. After all, money talks. In this economic climate, some people can be pretty motivated to liqudate dust catchers. Let us know how you make out.

It's truly about what the buyer and seller can agree on. I sold my 5 year old tandem for $3k, and the buyer was stoked (no pun intended) with that price.

A lot depends on the condition of the bike and the mileage it has. Does it fit you and your stoker? Can you test ride it? Do you like the color? How bad do you want it?

Unless it fit me perfectly and it was very close to my dream tandem and I wanted/needed to have it right away and it looked and felt almost brand new, I will not pay more than $1,500

It's hardly definitive, but it was created to answer this all-too-frequent question about used tandem values:
