We took my archer gearbox apart and cleaned it up. The thing had never been greased after the factory build, the original grease was petrified. Does Silicone spray lube replace good old fasion grease?

It should have oil in it, grease in the outer bearings only.

The hub should only be greased if new enough to not have an oiler installed on the hub. Otherwise clean thoroughly, reassemble the parts and thoroughly oil with 20 or 30 weight oil then install the internal assembly back into the shell. Then add a few drops of oil every few weeks, depending on amount of use. Excess oil will leak out so wipe down the exterior occasionally. As wahoonc mentioned, grease the wheel bearings during assembly with standard bike bearing grease.
If no oiler then the proper grease to use is SAE 00 grease. This is a very thin body grease which should be available at some mower repair shops. Regular thick grease is a no no.

Guess I messed up then:bang:. While you were replying I was rebulding it with a full load of Red Devil grease.

When you apply oil make sure it's pure oil and not one with vegetable oil in it. Some of the "general household oils" claim to be about 20 weight, but actually have filler in them. I stick with motor oil, of 20 or 30 weight. It's usually 30 because it's easier to find locally.
