Mountain Biking - My new worn out bike.

Newbie here, I'm old school mountain biker and I've just traded my hardtail for a project. It'a a 2001 Cannondale Jekyll 600, The poor thing has been ridden hard and put away wet. My job is to make it new, shiny, and happy again.

The rear Fox shock was pretty weak and the lockout wont work, But I can live with it for now. The front end is SHOT! Super fatty headshock, threads are stripped so it wont hold air and it's wired on so it will stay up. Works for riding to the grocery store but thats about it. Brake pads are worn out needs new wires, already put tires on it, (it had road bike tires on it and the front fork backwards :notamused:)

I like it though, I can see the potential more than I can see the faults. I will need all the tips I can get though cause until now I've only worked on hardtails and this is a new kind of animal to me.

I've always said duct tape and bailing wire could fix anything. Never thought about bailing wire and cotter pins. Ingenious! Good luck, looks like a worthwhile project.

Does the frame where the shock is interfere with your legs? I don't see rub marks so it probably didn't with the former owner.

Thats just classic Ford blue, My mean & nasty Cleveland build on my bench will be black so it wont look dirty after it's driven.

I'm not brave enough to ride this bike hard yet (The wires & cotter pin scare me for jumping :D) but the frame seems comfortable so far, the shock mount is a little bigger than a water bottle would be at the same location.

Oh okay. I guess I didn't compare it with the bb. I see now.

I have nearly this exact bike, except it's a Jeckyl 500 with a lower end headshock (elastomer only).
It has served me pretty well, overall. The biggest problem I've had is with sluggish upshifting in the rear derailleur. The cause is that fairly tight reverse S-bend in the cable housing, you can clearly see it in your photos. That bend already adds a lot of friction to the cable, and any gunk in it really slows the shifting down. The damping in the headshock is pretty much gone so it's like a pogo stick, but I've gotten lots of miles out of the bike so can't complain.

Cool older bike, what year? And what did you pay for it? So far I have brought back to life, 3 late 90's hardtails. I wouldn't sell them for anything.
