I have an old NightSun NiCad system (about 1990) and want to get an aftermarket replacement battery. I read somewhere that the NightSun batteries have reversed polarity (red -, black +). If I get a different brand battery, do I have to reverse the polarity to use with my NightSun lights? Do I need to change the connectors to do this?

If its a simple halogen it shouldn't matter if you mix up + / -

I have the dual headlight nightsun. It has 10 and 35 watt lights. It has a 3 position switch which allows you to run 1 or both lights together. Hook the battery up one way and the 10 watt bulb lights alone. Switch it and the 35 does.

Remember, this is not an LED. Polarity means nothing to a halogen filament.

As for battery packs, I went with a "training aid" 12V SLA. Yeah, it weighs a ton (about 7 lbs), but, it sure makes my bike feel light in the summer when I take it off. Also, I can use it multiple days in a row on my nearly 2 hour round trip commute without any noticable dimming. I still charge it every night between commutes since a short cycled SLA is a happy SLA. I expect to get quite a few years out of it since it never gets run down much.

If weight is important, go with the Ni or Li stuff, but, you will spend a lot more , not only in batteries themselves, but in expensive chargers.
