Mountain Biking - Need Help finding a Shock for 2000 Specialized Expedition

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hello,
I have a 2000 Specialized Expedition with no suspension - just a steel fork. I'd like to add a suspension fork ($150 or less). I mostly ride in NYC where the roads are pretty awful but they still don't compare to say downhill or rock jumping. I don't know what size or whether my fork is threaded or not. How do I determine what will fit my bike? Besides bringing it to a bike shop, which is an option.

The Expedition is their comfort bike correct? Depending on the model, you may or may not have a threadless headset. How does your stem attach? Does the headset have a threaded bearing race and a locknut? Or, does it have a stem that has pinch bolts that clamp around the steerer?
If you have the latter, you can pretty much use any threadless 1-1/8" suspension fork. Cheap ones are as little as $60, expensive ones can run over $1,000.

Its a threaded bearing race and locknut. Does that mean that I shouldn't bother?

You could have the headset and stem replaced to change out to a threadless steertube.

Agreed, that might be easier (and cheaper in the long run) than trying to find a suspension fork with a threaded steerer.
I'm sure there are fork with threaded steerers, but just not many of them. So, you may be able to find a new headset ($15.00) and a new stem (seen as cheap as $6.00) and a closeout on a threadless fork.(as low as $60.00), for less money.
Good Luck.

There are threaded 1 1/8" steerer tube forks in the QBP cat.
