Winter Cycling - '04-'05 Winter preparation thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Last winter, I spent more $ replacing components that were damaged from freezing water (Ultegra left hand shifter) than from road salt (Avid shorty caliper brake). Whatever you're riding, make sure you wipe the road slush off as much of the bike as you can manage and make sure it's dry before you go back outside. Frozen stuff is bad news.
I wouldn't think you could get a reasonable winter tire on an Allez. Can you?

Not really, but it doesn't ice/snow too terribly often here (Raleigh, NC). However, the local gvt. is fond of salting the roads at the slightest inkling of snow or ice. All in all, most winter precipitation is merely cold rain. Just worried about the salt rusting components.

For Winter I recommend new tires, because they grip much better than tires that
have been worn down, even a little.
