Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - need a lock

im looking to pick up a kryptonite evolution series u lock, but im not sure weather to get the mini or the standard. and where are the cheapest place to get either?

I already bought the standard, so too little too late for me.

But after I bought it, I read all kinds of stuff on bike protection. The less "slack" you have on the lock, the harder it is to compromise via bolt cutters or a jack. To that end the mini will most likely serve you better. However, if you anticipate locking around thick poles/trees or something, the standard might do you better.

get two minis trust me there will be a time when you want to lock it good

The mini's will get you around most bike racks and signposts around a city. I have yet to struggle to find parking.

Im thinking of getting a kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit three foot chain & lock to lock the back wheel and frame, and an old but pretty sturdy onguard U lock for the front wheel. Is this a good plan? Overkill or not enough? Should I go for the 2 minis instead?

should be ok I wouldn't leave your bike out all the time either way

That sounds pretty good. Seems like you can never overkill locking your bike in NYC. The more the better. And I believe smaller locks are more secure b/c thieves don't get as much leverage with the small amount of space between the lock and the bike.

I'm in New York as well. I've gotten by seven years with the same kryptonite NY chain + OnGuard mini-U for the wheel. Granted my bike's not very coveted (repainted frame, decent wheels, nothing spectacular) but it's worked this far. And like spcialzdspksman said just make sure the U's small; all else being equal, they're harder to defeat.

As for two minis, it's probably safe enough but not as versatile. I constantly find myself places where the only option to lock is a street light, and no one's locked to it because U-locks won't get around it. You can even chain to fire hydrants if you cinch it tight under the nozzles.

Look up the user CaptainCropper on Youtube, they've got a bunch of videos of them snapping chains with bolt cutters. They use a pair 4' long leveraged against the ground with their full weight for close to a minute to cut some of the chains. Their point was that these chains can be quickly defeated but it gave me more confidence in mine.
