Mountain Biking - XTR drivetrain parts

so i just got back from the bike store and they told me my front derailleur, cassette and chain have to be replaced, dont ask why its my fault and i feel like an idiot. anyways, im wondering since i have deore components im thinking of just upgraging my whole drivetrain to xtr. if i have a 2009 rear xtr derailleur can i use it with a 2008 front derailleur? can i use a deore cassette with xtr dreailleurs? also whats the difference in the deore, deore LX and deore XT line?

If you've got the dough XTR is nice, I find XT to be a nice blend of performance/price. Mix and match is fine, make sure you buy the right FD for your specific bike though. Good luck.

Some bike are better suited with a top swing than a bottom swing derailleur, Some are designed for top pull,,,,,,,, others are built for bottom pull. It's really a no brainer. look at how yours works, and get the same style.

well if you read the original post its one of the things that need to be replaced so theres no point in wasing lube on something im going to throw out next week

That's a top pull, bottom swing. Make sure you get one with the correct clamp diameter.

If you've got the cash to do it and you want to try some high end parts, now's the time to do it. I always laugh when someone comes on here to tell us about their new bike and they want to know whether they should go with full XTR or X0 on it. They should have bought that bike not the one they left the store with. Ride it and replace whatever breaks with the parts you want.

You can run XTR with XT, or even SRAM components. If you pay attention you'll see bikes with a mashup of components all the time. XTR derailleurs and shifters with XT cranks. X0 derailleurs and shifters with XTR cranks. As long as you're buying compatible components you can mix product lines and manufacturers to match personal preference, save weight, save money, or whatever. These bikes are just expensive toys so you might well put your money into exactly what you want to make you happy. Of course, once you get it you want to take care of it so don't forget to lube your chain every time you ride.

When replacing derailleurs you also need to be careful about getting the right clamp size for your tube. I find that if you wrap a piece of string around where your derailleur would go and then measure it (ie. your circumference) you can use high school geometry to figure out which clamp you need. Alternatively, if it looks like it's on a plate going to your bb you just need an ebracket.

Keep using rusty chain saw blades for chains and your **** will be wore out and needing replaced every other week.....:twitchy:

As for your question, XTR and XT products work great together, that's all I run and love it. Ebay is your best friend on used products that work like new.
