Cyclocross Racing - Making the switch.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
When do you guys switch over from road to cross? This is my second year racing cross and I enjoy it much more than road or crit racing. I want to get an early jump on cyclocross but I have 3 or 4 more road races on tap for the season.

I've pretty much shut down on racing road, especially since I have to travel more to find races. I took 10 days completely off the bike about 2 weeks ago.
I've now started running and boy is it a completely different work out. My first race is 9/12 so getting ready for that

About a month ago for me. In general, it's a good idea to take a break between seasons. You know, that whole burnout thing.
I think I have made the decision to shut down road for the year. Signed up for my first cross race on the 29th of August. I still am going to do one more road race but that isn't until October.

About this time of year is when I put the road wheels on the cross bike and start getting used to the fit. I'll start a bit of running next week and probably at the end of the month start training on the practice cross course. I've started mountain bike riding at least once a week about a month ago too. I find MTB riding to be very good training for cross.

The switch?
The only reason I've been racing on the road is to prepare for 'cross. This year I bought a 29er and did some short track mountain bike races in an effort to improve my off-road riding skills.
I've been back on the 'cross bike for about 2 weeks. I'll usually get on the 'cross bike once a week until after Labor Day weekend (which marks the end of the road season in St. Louis).
There are only 10 types of people in the world; those who understand binary, and those who don't.
Funny. :)

My last planned road race of the season is this Sunday. Then it's a week or two of JRA and starting a new job before I do anything that resembles 'training'. I've been on my 'cross bike about twice a week for the past few months just to mix things up on easy rides, but have been starting to get a little more serious about practicing dismounts and remounts and whatnot.
