Bicycle Mechanics - cheap suzue hub

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
i just built my first fixie. i used the cheap suzue flip-flop hub. when i took it out for the very first test ride today, the hub broke. the axle is loose inside the hub. all the lube inside came seeping out. i can jiggle the axle without moving the hub. the bearing cover on one side popped off. what to do? is this really broken?
put it closer to the keyboard so i can see.
short answer is maybe but you need to give more info. If you didn't ride it far, chances are the locknuts were not tight and the cones backed off. The surest way to see what is going on is to overall the hub. A loose dustcover is usually not a great sign, as that usually means there is a lot of play. However, these hubs may be inexpensive but when set up properly, they are hardy.
On a similar note, you might want to have someone double-check your cog and lockring...
The Suzue basic hubs come as crap from the factory. You NEED to make sure there is grease in there and that they are adjusted properly. I have the same hubs on my fixie and they had absolutely NO grease in them when I bought them. I did a quick lube and adjust and they work fine.
If you didn't do anything to them when you built the rims you definitely need to overhaul them.
