I've had good experiences with them the times I've gotten repairs at their shop, everyone I dealt with was knowledgeable.

Same here....I dealt with them a handful of times in person on my rides up to Nyack. They were very knowledgeable. However, this time I'm just left with a nasty taste in my mouth.
So have you previously posted about the times that they were helpful or did you just wait till now to complain?
This is the kind of response eBay sellers give when they're selling some kind of used item, cheap, and don't want to guarantee that it's suitable for anything. My guess is, if you want a knowledgeable response, you'll have to pay the usual retail price. Maybe it works. Maybe it doesn't. Either way, they probably feel it isn't worth their time to have a mechanic respond for an item with a starting bid of 99¢

Why would you assume that a mechanic would be able to say with 100% certainty that this will work? It is a 9-speed derailleur designed to work with 9-speed systems. I think they are being responsible by saying that they can't be 100% sure. It's not up to them to make you feel safer trying to use something for what it isn't specifically designed for.
