Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Front Brake Lever-Right or Left?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So I think MOST of you (I could be wrong) have front brakes riding on your SS/FG. But I see most levers for front brakes go on the left handlebars, like most bikes with front and rear brakes. So I'm just wondering how many of you switch the lever to the right just so it's more convenient? Or am I just whack for even having this idea?

front brake on the right is common on bicycles in the UK and on motorcycles everywhere. So it's not izzacly wack.
I got no levers on my ss, so can't answer that question.

Since you'll only have one brake, make it your dominate hand.

My right hand is the dominant one so I put the brake there because it's more comfortable. Also I believe I would probably react faster with my dominant hand. Besides, you're supposed to use your left hand for signaling, not that anyone in the SSFG forum is lame enough to do that.
Can't stand front brake on the left when signaling. Flip 'em!

Left, because I don't have a motorcycle, and it makes for easier transitions between the FG and other bikes.

Well you can have a break lever on each side without looking excessively ugly. So everyone can be happy. ... Actually I might go for it if I can get a hand on it second hand. Too expensive you see?

I just leave it loose flopping off the frame. I reach down and grab it if I need it.
but seriously, if you're only using 1 lever make it your dominant hand.

Of the last three bikes that I bought, two had the front brake on the left and the other on the right. The one with the brake on the right was assembled and set up by a "lefty".

i am gonna install brakes on my track bike when it arrives. i am thinking right as well, for the left hand to be free to signal and for my dominate hand to brake.
vote was almost dead even until i voted though 19-18.
i guess there is no legit answer huh?
I put mine on the left side of the stem, but facing so my right hand can grab it. It's centered in my bars.

That's the reason why I have the lever on the right.
Left, because I don't have a motorcycle, and it makes for easier transitions between the FG and other bikes.
Right because I do have a motorcycle and every front brake has to be on the same side r pain will ensue

not that anyone in the SSFG forum is lame enough to do that.
brakes, helmet, signaling. damn, I need to start getting less lame

Mine is on the right.
No idea why. When I built it, I just put it there without thought.
Possibly because my BMX had it's one and only brake on the right.
Current = right - 23; left - 22

I have bikes set up both ways. Makes no difference to me.
Anyone here run one of these?

no I don't own one its on the correct side but it's upside down the long handle is supposed to go in front of the stem

Left, just because that's the way I'm used to it. There are some legitimate reasons for a right-handed person to run it on the right, but I can't be bothered to change it, might as well just stick with what I'm used to. There's a good write-up on this on Sheldon's site though.

I run my front on the right on all my bikes. Been doing it since I got my first racing bike in the '80's. My wrench rode "English", suggested I give it a whirl, and I was quickly hooked. Been setting my bikes up that way ever since.
I always keep the front on the right and back on the left. Last bike I bought I even requested them to switch them, they wouldn't because they said it would make shifting difficult (it had brifters). I switched it when I got it home and haven't had any problems.
I like it being consistent with my motorcycle.

I ride with the front as the left. I think it makes the cabling easier to do, looks a little cleaner when the cable comes down at a less extreme angle.

Like most people said, just run it on whichever side you personally prefer. I went with left, the standard on bicycles. It took some getting used to because I'm so used to riding motorcycles, where the front brake is on the right hand.

Thanks for telling me that I can physically decide on what to do, genius. What, am I on Mars, birdbrain? You know, I bet most people on BF came here to get an opinion instead of reading your useless ******** comments. For a change, why don't you use the time posting dipsh!t comments trying to get a life you prick.
And thank you everyone else for your opinions. I was originally planning to change it to the right anyhow, but now I most probably will after I give both ways a try. Thanks for the help!

Run the front brake on the right so I can signal with my left. I almost got hit a couple times with the brake on the left. Haven't had a problem since.
R or L, you can't figure this out ? SAD!

On a geared bike: Some times I shift down and use my front brake at the same time, when Ive got to slow down for traffic, or what not. Ever since I started that habbit ive thought it was a sin to put the front brake on the right side.

To be honest, I had already used the left side lever on one bike, and decided to try the remaining right hander on my Pista. I was curious about the set up, and it's really not a big deal. Kinda like riding a moto.
I think both setups work just fine.
