Folding Bikes - Opinions on choosing my 1st folder

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My wife and I have been looking to replace our 2-yr-old mountain bikes with folders. At the time when we bought the mountain bikes, we thought we might do some "off-road" or trail ridings but that never materialized. One of the reason is due to our small car, the only option to carry the bikes anywhere was to use a bike rack that mounts on the trunk but it put tons of micro scratches on our brand new car after just 1 trip so we had never used it again.

We live in NYC and have only been riding our mountain bikes on the same paved bike path near the Belt pkwy. The longest ride we've done was like 12-15 miles and that's probably the most we would ever do. A major reason for the folders is for the ease of transportation, it would allow us to carry the folders inside the trunk of our small car if we ever wanted to ride outside of the bike path. The weight of the bikes really isn't the most important thing since we probably won't be carrying them on foot too often. However, I do want something that's not too heavy just in case.

Well, after a bit of research on the web & tons of reading on this great forum, we have narrowed it down to either the 08 Mu P8 or 08 Speed P8. My wife and I test rode them both at an authorized Dahon local bike shop. For me, I think both of these bikes perform equally well. I kind of like the Mu for the lighter weight but prefers the look of the Speed, not to mention that it's $120 cheaper than the Mu ($480 sp p8 vs $600 mu p8 on thorusa.com). As for my wife, she likes both of them but I tend to think that the Mu is probably a better choice for her due to the lighter weight.

Our minds are pretty much set but we are just looking for some opinions so free feel to share yours. Thanks!

Sounds to me like you've done some pretty good research and are leaning in the right direction. Lots of Dahon fans here. Folders are fun!

Thor, what's your take on these 2 bikes? Also, how do you ship if I opt for the VIP service? Will I be able to ride these bikes after minimal setup right out of the box? Please advise.

i got all my mu p8 2008 sold ..sorry .....i have plenty of 09 ones
I will check the bikes for minimal assembly .... VIP service I like to do but real busy at the moment , therefore I sugest not to do that ... but again they are checked and pretty much rideable out of the box , definitely ok for Dahon lifetime warranty ........

they are both good bikes. if i were you i will get 1 speed p8 and one mu p8. that way you've got the best of both world. you can't go wrong with either one of them. in this case it might just be a case of appearance. i might be bias since i owned a mu and i will tell you that i like the look of mu better than the speed. not unless you are getting the speed pro tt then it's a different story all together. good luck and you will enjoy the ride of these bikes. be sure to post some pics once you have them.

That's exactly what I was going to do but Thor said, in the post above yours, that the 08 Mu P8 are sold out. I don't want the 09 models since the prices are substantially higher. I guess my wife and I will be going out with matching folders just like everything else that we buy together. =)

Awesome, but be careful... folders are addictive. I fully expect to see a post from you in a year where you bought some brand new Jetstream P8s to tackle that mountain biking itch. ;)
