My wife and I have been looking to replace our 2-yr-old mountain bikes with folders. At the time when we bought the mountain bikes, we thought we might do some "off-road" or trail ridings but that never materialized. One of the reason is due to our small car, the only option to carry the bikes anywhere was to use a bike rack that mounts on the trunk but it put tons of micro scratches on our brand new car after just 1 trip so we had never used it again.
We live in NYC and have only been riding our mountain bikes on the same paved bike path near the Belt pkwy. The longest ride we've done was like 12-15 miles and that's probably the most we would ever do. A major reason for the folders is for the ease of transportation, it would allow us to carry the folders inside the trunk of our small car if we ever wanted to ride outside of the bike path. The weight of the bikes really isn't the most important thing since we probably won't be carrying them on foot too often. However, I do want something that's not too heavy just in case.
Well, after a bit of research on the web & tons of reading on this great forum, we have narrowed it down to either the 08 Mu P8 or 08 Speed P8. My wife and I test rode them both at an authorized Dahon local bike shop. For me, I think both of these bikes perform equally well. I kind of like the Mu for the lighter weight but prefers the look of the Speed, not to mention that it's $120 cheaper than the Mu ($480 sp p8 vs $600 mu p8 on thorusa.com). As for my wife, she likes both of them but I tend to think that the Mu is probably a better choice for her due to the lighter weight.
Our minds are pretty much set but we are just looking for some opinions so free feel to share yours. Thanks!
