General Cycling Discussion - spd sore outside of feet - what am I doing wrong?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have some older spd pedals (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=564642) on a road bike and I picked up 2 pairs of shoes from craigslist. The shoes I have been using are Shimano MO75 (M075?). They seem to fit great, but even after a short ride the outside edge of my foot gets sore or crampy. I have been walking around in the shoes this afternoon, and I haven't had any pain from that, but for some reason when I'm clipped in and pedaling I get the discomfort after only a short ride. I haven't done anything longer than a few miles because I would like to get comfortable first. Right now, the cleats are positioned just about centered in the openings.
Do I just need to ride a bit more and get comfortable with them?
Is there something wrong with the pedal or shoe?
Do I need to move the cleats?

When this happened to me the culprit was the insoles. I picked up a set of Specialized BG insoles and life has been good since.

I occasionally have the same problem (M-540 pedals and Sidi Bullet shoes) but usually only after several hours in the saddle.
It almost always goes away if I stop and loosen the shoe, sometimes a good bit. I think my feet swell enough to affect the fit.
And I don't imagine it would be a factor with your pedals, but with MTB SPDs the platform is fairly small, and sometimes doesn't seem to offer enough support to the outside of the foot if the cleat is even a little too far to the inside (big toe side) of the shoe.
YMMV, opinions expressed are based on a tiny data sample!
I have the same problem with Sidi Genius shoes or Vittoria SR5 shoes and Look pedals. Usually during the first few miles of my ride. Then it goes away.

I had the same issue with road pedals and switched to half and half pedals and have been fine... since I am more of a tourist and commuter these pedals are much nicer as I can also use them with ordinary shoes / sandals / boots / mukluks.
If I was to go back to using road pedals I would get a stiffer insole for my shoe as lack of lateral support across the footbed seems to be the issue.

This might help.

Is there supposed to be contact with the shoe and the pedal other than the cleat? My shoe tread contacts the pedal on the right side seen here.

I suppose this could cause the shoe to slope slightly away from the bike, putting my foot in an uncomfortable position.
Is this contact normal?
Do these pedals need different cleats?
Are these pedals just a little weird?
I see 2 options:
1. shim the cleat
2. trim away some of the shoe tread
option 2 seems better / cheaper.

I would try option 2 as well, but if you continue to have problems you should consider either shimming the cleat (kits are available for about $20) or buying insoles that are beveled to achieve a result similar to the shims. I've got shims under my left cleat, none under my right follow a fitting.
trimmed away the tread so there is no longer contact, and everything seems better on the rollers. will see when I get a chance to take it for a longer ride.
