Road Cycling - What are the best wheels?

Trek does Bontrager, while a lot of other companies do Mavic. Ksyrium vs. Race X Lite? What would you choose and why. I am not familiar with many other companies, so if those are better, than post away.

Some better for climbing then flats so it depends where you ride the most. Hills,flats or both.

From what I have heard, the Bontrager wheels have issues with heavier riders. I am 210lbs and ride Ksyrium SSL SC wheels and have NO complaints. I have hit plenty O' pothole, and have yet to see them need any work. That is just right around 1000 miles trouble free. Hard to beat that.

I rode both (X-lite & SSL SC) and found them to be comparable in both performance and price. I liked the looks of the X-lite better. Simple as that.

A local shop designed the Crono wheel, now distributed by Cane Creek. I believe they got a patent on the nipples at the hub design. http://www.cronometro.com/Cronowheels.html

Everything I've used from Mavic has been 100% quality. Great performance and durabilty.

Someday, when I build my crazy fast TT bike, I'm going Nimble.

if you've got the cash to blow, topolinos or rolf elan aero.

each set will set you back around $900.

i've been growing less and less fond of my ksyriums as time passes. i think the above are better wheels for the dollars.

also, american classics, or a set of phil or king hubs and some open pro rims build up by someone who knows what they're doing.

i also like the looks of the new shimano DA wheels, but haven't seen em in person.

Mayo put 2 minutes on Lance during the time trial up Mt. Ventoux in the Dauphine this year.

I've got a set, but the older ones, before they started milling out the rim between the spokes. I love my Toobies.......

My wheel of choice would be a handbuilt(preferably by yourself) whelset built with either chris king or white ind hubs and open pro or dt rims and dt revo spokes.

I can speak from my experience with two sets of Mavics, that both the perfomance and durability has been exceptional. One set, CXP21rims on 105 hubs with 8,200 miles recieved a very minor truing touch up (back wheel) on two spokes( at about 7,800 mile mark). The other set, Mavic OpenPros on Ultegra, have about 1,800 miles and are still like "out-of-box" condition. Both sets are 3cross 32 spoke. I weigh 163lbs. There are other good bike wheels out there but the Mavics I've ridden have been perfect.

I ride them and they were great for a year without issue. Then one day when starting a sprint I had a spoke let go. BOING! My rear wheel was so messed up that I couldn't get it completely re-trued.

Gotta' put in a plug for Campy Neutrons. I've been riding these for a couple of years now with some pretty serious mileage. Well in excess of 10K miles. I've hit some pretty nasty potholes at speed and they have yet to be retrued. You can get them set up with Shimano cassettes if that's what you need.
