Fifty Plus (50+) - It stops!!!

I finally gave in and purchased new brake pads for my daily commuter, the Volae. I seldom replaced pads ever in the past on any of my bikes as I never really thought much would be gained. Well, I was wrong. What a difference! I took the bike out into the street to test the brakes and verify my shifting was O.K. (I had also cleaned my super grungy chain). I squeezed the right brake lever and almost did a face plant into the handlebar! I couldn't believe the stopping power!

Moral of the story: Don't be a miser like me, freshen those pads and stop on a dime!

I bought it used with 1000 miles on it. I've put on another 1000 miles, so perhaps as many as 2000 miles if they were original pads.

My fronts still work pretty good but I'm going to change them also, of course now I'll be expecting a big improvement. :eek:

If the improvement on the front is as dramatic as it was on the rears, I'll be changing pads on the rest of my bikes too.

If it helps, I just put new pads on the rear of my road bike after 9600 miles. That was too long to wait, they were worn down a bit too much.

I don't know how these rank in the order of brake parts, but they seem to be working O.K. for me....but of course, time and miles will be the true test.

OH NO!!!!!! these are the pads that are not recommended for use on recumbents- apparantly they can fall apart after about 10 to 11 miles so take it carefully:innocent:

Don't know the particular pads but avid are not bad.

I don't know if you plan to commute in foul weather this year. If so, you may want to look at Kool-Stop Salmon. The salmon-colored ones are for wet weather riding.

I also like their black ones for riding in the dry. That's what I have on Yellow Bike. Stop great, last long, and easy on the rims too.

Now if I install Salmon pads, will I have to out-run Grizzly Bears? :o

Did a 20 mile Ice Cream Ride this evening. At 11 miles I got quite nervous, but all was O.K.

Tomorrow my commute will be at 04:00 am, in the dark...so if anything goes wrong at least I won't see it!!! :recum:

Yeah, right around the opening day of deer season is when we've traditionally had the first snow that sticks. It's been a wee bit later the past few years.

Accuweather's long range forecast last month said that here in the northeast, we should prepare for a longer, colder, snowier winter this year. Just like Mom used to make!

In twelve weeks the temps here should drop to a brisk 78 degrees average. I might have to use my leg and arm warmers. :lol: But I should start my second build and remake the Jamis in case it rains now and then. :innocent:

78 degrees!!!!! Oh my!!!! I hate it when it gets really, really hot like that!!!!

Really, it's amazing how we tend to become accustomed to the weather in our own local climates. Where most of us around here don't mind temps in the 50's and 60's all that much, folks in warmer climates may consider those as frigid and be searching for winter coats!! The same human physiology but different tolerences. Strange creatures we are.
