Not as much as in the past but Olney, IL still lives and breaths bicycles. Years back the original factory was AMF. Latter years it sold to Roadmaster, and then to Pacific Cycle. Pacific Cycle ran it as a mfg plant until a few years back and then moved alot of production to Mexico and now uses the entire plant facilities for offices and distribution. Some of the old AMF and Roadmaster employees are still there, but mostly new people and not very many of them. My wife worked there when Roadmaster started to shut down and she and others were let go. Most lost their retirement and went on to other jobs. I guess the good thing about Pacific Cycle still in town is they have a really good Factory Retail store there with great prices. All their own products, but fair quality and good pricing, as much as half or more off retail. My wife still has one of the original Roadmaster Comfort Ladies bikes made in the early nineties from there and the old time employess were real excited to see the bike. I is in almost new condition and they looked up the serial number and could tell from the old plant records what assembly line it was made on, when, what time of day, and who the line bosses were. That really excited them. My wife's other bike is a 2006 GT Timberline LTD ladies frame and mine is a 2005 GT Timberline LTD. Both came from the Factory Retail store new. Both GT's are setup with racks and bags, lites, computers, and bottles. We do a lot of rides in southern Illinois and southern Indiana, 20-25 mile rides with some hills. Group rides and some just by ourselves. The old Roadmaster Comfort is getting passed down to a daughter in Florida.
As for Olney, bike capital is just a play on words, but we do have the following offices and distribution facilities all within the city:
Pacific Cycle
SKS USA
KHS Bicycle Parts
Provello
Magura -USA Corp
Highway 2
Esge_Marby Co
So, there you have it (us). My wife commutes to work every morning weather permits and I on good weather days and I us our car on days it may rain. We both work at the same place, so the car always makes sure we have a way home if the weather turns bad. If not she commutes both ways. We also try to ride most evenings and have a dog basket on the front of her bike so our 2 year Shi Tzu can go with us. She just loves to go and rides real good in the basket. Thanks for the welcome and good, safe riding.
