whats the difference between the long and short cage preformance wise? i know one is short and the other is long, but whats the difference? if i have a long cage on my bike now can i swap it out for a short cage?

I think the difference is the efficiency in taking up chain slack and that short derailleurs have better clearance on the trail.

Its all about capacity.

Depending on your crank and cassette setup you might not be able to run a short cage derailleur.
