Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Trash find: Schwinn World Tourist

My wife came home with a 62cm Scwhinn World Tourist tonight that she rescued from a neighbor's garbage identical in every way to the one pictured below.

Unfortunately the handlebars and fork are badly bent as though someone backed over it in a car and the crankset is missing, but the frame looks really nice. Does anyone happen to know anything about these bikes?

For 26 bucks, those are awesome. Thanks. I'm thinking of restoring it to how it should be but as a single speed.

I was actually able to straighten out the fork with some very careful pulling (one side was squished inward but nothing was twisted) and aside from all the paint chipping off where I bent it back, it looks perfect.

Its better then the collegiate, or varsity cruiser type. The only bikes that belong in the trash are suspension department store bikes.

Saddles gotta go though. Yuck. Good find though. I love building up junk bikes, as a hobby. (Not to say I don't have nice bikes.)

Yeah...from what I understand, the World Tourist is one of the better old Schwinns and the lugs actually look pretty nice. I'm looking forward to making some sort of budget cruiser out of it.

Either that or I'll "put it back in the garbage".

if someone backed over it with a car then the liklihood of the frame being straight are pretty bad.

there's tons of unbent hi-ten bikes in the dumpster out there, just seems like a terrible base to work off of.

On the contrary; I converted my Varsity to a tourist style bike. I had the orginal Schwinn racing seat but got an old Schwinn touring seat like you have and let me tell ya, it's the perfect seat for the bike. Frankly, I don't think a bike like that rates a Brooks. You have the next best thing.
