Depends On which bike. My '88 Alpine is 24" and my '07 Sirrus is 22"

I've found that a hacksaw and WD-40 make chopping bars an easy task. Any bars longer than 22" get the treatment.

A pipecutter off ebay is even better. Costs about $10 - it's a disc that fits around the bar, you twirl it and the end of the bar falls off. Great fun for playing practical jokes on your friends...

Heh, I had to convert metric to imperial on that one. Mine was 58cm (22.8"), but I chopped it down to 50 (19.7"). It still seems wide to me, but if I go any narrower, I won't have any place for my quick-release headlight. 50cm is tolerable at least. At 58cm, I felt like a sail in the wind.

I put drops on mine and from the outside to the outside of the drops measures 17"

Running drops that are 43 cm (17 in) or roughly the width of my shoulders, center to center and joint to joint. I find that its best for me in breathing and leverage. And then there is room for a handlebar bag and computer and or light.

I'm reviving this oldish thread as I'm wondering if I should attack my handlebars with a hacksaw. I'm running a Trek Valencia, but swapped the handlebars for ones off an old mountain bike. These MTB bars (like the stock bars on the Trek, and my wife's Specialized Globe are 600mm or 24") I've been kitting the bike out for a 1000 km, 16 day tour later this year, and the seagull type bars on the Valencia struggled to take a bar bag. I've also stuck some bar ends on the handlebar thinking I'd like the additional hand positions for those 1000 km. I've done 50 miles over the weekend, and I liked the bar ends, but I feel the whole contraption is getting rather wide. In particular, with my hands on the bar ends my wrists are cocked (I'm not particularly wide shouldered, quite the opposite in fact), and I'm thinking that might not be very comfortable over 1000km. So, I'm thinking an inch off either side of the bar might do the trick. Is this what people do given that 22" appears to be the preferred option in this poll when 24" seems to be the default width on hybrids/MTBs?
