Persevere……..
Many of you are familiar with my on going battle with the Amazons. For those of you that are not, the Amazons are these two lovely young ladies that have been tormenting me for the last 4 years. As I am riding along they come up from behind and very merrily say hello and then proceed to drop me. I have always referred to them as Xena and Sheena. (To myself, I in fact do not know their true names) Xena is the taller of the two. She is, to my best guess about 6’ tall, with a body builders physique and long brown hair. Sheena is about 2” shorter with blond hair but equally fit.
Tonight as I was riding my normal route I spied the Amazons preparing for battle. As luck would have it I had been riding at a very relaxed pace and my legs were feeling very fresh. Sure enough as I pass their house Xena nudges Sheena and points to the “fresh meat” riding by and they both wave. As if to say, “We see you and we will be coming for you….” I steeled myself for the impending battle…….
Sure enough, a mile down the road I hear the familiar, “Mind if we draft a while till we warm up?” “Certainly!” I say as I formulate my plan. In the past I would try my best to wear them out and beat them with pure speed. That ploy however never worked. Tonight I had the proper tools and the right plan.
I kept up my easy pace for about another mile, and then slowed a bit. They took the bait. First Xena came by my left then Sheena. I quickly up shifted and jumped on Sheena’s wheel. She looked back briefly then must have said something to Xena because Xena turned and looked at me, flashed me that infuriatingly gorgeous smile and clicked up one more gear. We battled like this for the next 20 miles. I set up a pattern of passing them just I we crested a small roller and they would pass me back on the next flat. Soon we were back within a mile of their house. One more long flat, then a steep but rather short hill, their driveway a short distance past the hill.
I had been watching their shifting pattern whenever we came to a roller and waited for my chance. There it was! Xena and Sheena shifted down 2 gears as if they were connected as we reached the bottom of the hill. Instead of following suit, which I had been doing for the last 20 miles, I shifted up one gear and stood ……no, danced my way to the top! Behind me I heard screams and curses of the wounded Amazons. I crested the hill and shifted up again and again putting every ounce of energy I had into the pedals.
As I flashed by their driveway my arms shot into the air as I basked in the glory of victory! Even the Amazons had to acknowledge my victory, with calls of, “You stud!” and my favorite, “Spank that azz”. What a glorious day!
