Wow, talk about an upgrade. You will get used to the downtube shifters eventually with a commute like yours.
Nice bike
The Cannondale Black Lightning needs it's original derailleurs.
The bike came from the factory with special black and gold anodized Superbe Pro RDs and gold FD.
My brother still has the Black Lightning he bought new in the 80's and he loves the bike to this day. Only thing he was dissapointed in was the Dupont paint finish that chipped real easy. Otherwise he said that it's a nice stiff and light bike that climbs real good!
Maybe the original owner still have these derailleurs that you can buy from him??

Incorrect.
That is an all original, 1989 or 1990 Cannondale SR500, Black Lightning. It came with Suntour Edge components those years.
Nice bike.

+ The only negative I see with Cannondales is the paint. I have three this year, all in great condition, except the paint chips really easy. Fortunately, black is a great color for touch up. Hopefully, by 1990 they got the paint right.

Jeez, where did you ride that day? Grand Canyon??:D
The lug gave way. That kinda bothers me now since most my bikes are lugged. I really don't want that hapening. thats only happened once but because I cut a department store bike up so as soon as someone sat on it. it would shatter... lol but it was recycled I used it as bike art

The exact same thing happened to my 1974 Raleigh Record. Fortunately for me, I had sold it a month earlier!

looks like the lug is intact and the tube broke at the join area. I miss my cannondale! "Cannondale Dave" is what they called me...sold it long ago :(

Clearly any black lightning with superbe pro components is the "fake" one.;)

Cleared it up with my younger brother this afternoon, The gold and black Suntour Superbe Pro derailleurs did come standard on the Black Lightning framset package he bought. I thought he bought a complete bike but now I do remember picking up the frameset with him from "Patio Bike Shop" south of Milwaukee back in the 80's. I guess Cannondale included the fancy Suntour derailleurs on the Black Lightning framesets to make them more desirable while the complete bikes had more "regular" derailleurs.
Here's the actual derailleur which I am giving back to my brother because I just convinced him to restore his Black lightning back to riding condition.

He still has the black and gold FD mounted on his bike.

Just keep an eye on those cantilevered dropouts; more than a few of those have failed.

Sure does not look like the lug gave way. Lug is still fully intact. Looks to me like the bike was damaged, and the downtube failed. Regardless, it is toast now.
