I've moved this from the general section forum.
I've bought a F.W.Evans Tourer de Luxe, mid 80's, frame number 851351. Evans have no records that go back that far. Does anyone have any idea exactly how old it is? Has anyone got/had one, or know of any archives that exist on old bikes? It's not obviously very important, but I'd like to know if I can.

I don't know anything about F. W. Evans, but if it has components on it from manufacturers such as Dia-Compe, Shimano or Suntour, you can probably find date codes stamped on them, which will give you a pretty good idea of when the bike was assembled. The Vintage Trek (http://www.vintage-trek.com/component_dates.htm) website has a pretty good guide to those codes. When in doubt, give us pictures. We like pictures.

That is incredibly useful information, thanks very much. Once I've checked I'll let you know what I find.
For your info, although I'd heard of W.F Evans when I started cycling in the late 50's it was a small firm in London so never made much impression. now I've bought one and started looking around I find that Evans cycles have several shops around the UK and I believe are one of the biggest retailers around.
I was quite surprised. I emailed them for info but they replied that their records didn't go back that far.
