Hi-
I just acquired a bright red 1989 TREK 400, with a 21" frame, and I can't keep it.
- It has a "True Temper" double-butted Chro-Mo frame, and the original Matrix 700c wheels, Aero brakes and indexed shifting.
- It has a non-orignal Shimano Deore rear derailleur, and Sakae-SX "Ovaltech" triple chain wheels.
- It will get new tires, tubes, cables, and chain, and I'll clean, tune and lube it before I sell it.
What would be a reasonable asking price?
In a good normal market $250, in clean, ready to ride condition. That would be full market around here.

Thank you WRK 101...
BTW - this looks like it will be a labor of love and no money, because upon disassembling it, I find it needs a BB Cartridge and freewheel, along with all the usual suspects. (It sure will be sweet bike for someone, once it's totally overhauled though).

$200 here, unless it's very clean, and well re-done, then add to that a bit.

Hey, Auchenchrow:
PM me please if that Trek is one-too-many projects for you at the moment. With your recent scores I imagine you may have your hands (or garage) full. ;- ] I would PM you but your acct is not set up for it.

$175-200 ready to go. Subtract from there.

Hi Chicago Al !
For sure, I have scored several nice bikes lately, but I believe this Trek is my penance for it - (and I'm already headlong into it....)
It is unrelenting, Al: I even had to buy new ball bearings for the front hub. Not a big expense but usually you can just clean and repack them, right? - Nooo - Not with this bike - it was almost devoid of lubricant. Same with the front forks. (I'm lucky the races were OK.)
I'll look into this PM thing - And if I finish it before it finishes me, I'll post a pic of the finished product.
Regards,
A.
Silly to clean old wheel bearings when you can buy them for about 2 cents a piece. I buy them by the bag (100 to 144).

Hi Wrk101 -
They are $.15@ at the LBS - so for sure I ought to order some - but they come in 1/4, 3/16, 5/16, 5/32, 7/32, and 1/8..... Are there a couple of sizes most commonly used ?

1/4" for BB and rear hubs, 3/16" for front hubs, 5/32" for HS and some pedals...these are all very general, always exceptions. I buy Grade 25 from supply houses, much cheaper than the LBS ($15 for 100? Ha, no thanks!).

I'll follow your lead, unworthy1, wrk101.
Thanks for the advice.

I buy them at Niagara, for about $3 a bag or less. I buy quite a bit of stuff from them. They are slow but reasonably priced. 1/4 and 3/16 are your two common sizes.
