i am going to start riding to school and i was wondering if bike theft in high school is common.. i just got my bike and i'd hate it to see it getting stolen.

Depends what the school is like. Either it will be left alone, some jocks will kick your wheels out of true, or someone will take it. When I rode to school, I parked at the gym across the street. As you're probably well aware, people in high school are idiots.

just bring a lock and make it appear to be secure. it will only get stolen if its not locked ie, no one is goign to come with an angle grinder and cut your lock or steal your wheelset. it probalby wont get kicked in unless you park it next to some bro truck.to be honest, most ppl thought it was cool that i rode bike to school yet had a car. and in highschool, the hipster **** is cool

It all depends on how u lock it... i think that if there are other ppl that actually know about bikes ( which means they can part a bike) then no matter what ur bike is NEVER safe!

Even if you lock it with 2 u-locks.. (rear and front to frame and to pole) and u run cables through the seat frame chainring, .. there are Still parts that can be stolen in a QUICKY! Parts like your fork (threadless) stem , bars, seat, seat post, Even your nice Track Chain... or pedals...

Basically, i wouldnt do it unless ur comfortable with the fact that someone can get all the parts listed above within 3 minutes.. But they are small parts..

There are so many different variables involved in something like this.
First of all, where do you live? Oakland, Ca or some other city. These thing help.
Public or Private school?
Bike in cage or out where anyone can touch it?
How well do you lock it?
Do you lock it to anything?
Are you a pri*k?
Are you a pu$$y?
Do you have any friends?
Are you a loner?
Are you popular?
Do you have a look at me attitude?
Do you disappear in the crowd?
Is it Red?
Is it Blue?
Is it Green?
Is it Pink?

Anyone one of these may lead someone to vandalize or steal your bike. No way to really understand the mind of people inclined to steal or vandalize.
Then there are those who will mess with it just for fun. If you go way over the top to make it secure, someone may consider it a challenge.

Best thing is to see what going on at the bike rack for a while. Do certain tough guys always park their bike in the same spot? If so, don’t part yours there! They might take offence and mess with your bike.

Do girls park on one side and guys on the other? Park with the guys! Observe the bike rack etiquette and make your own decision.

Then lock it up as best you can and make sure anything that can be removed by quick release is locked.

just get a bike, throw it in some mud and/or down a hill a few times, get it banggggged up and it won't be a problem. OR super glue all parts to it HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Yes, this. I went to high school in a wealthy mostly-white suburban town, and my bike (an ancient 10-speed) still got vandalized on a weekly basis. I was often one of the only bikes on the rack on any given day for the couple months I rode it (until I got fed up with it)- if there are a lot of kids riding these days, maybe your chances will be better. Don't take anything nice to school.

well, its a semi-urban city, northern jersey, around 20k population, the school is like 80% white kids and 20% asian, they do get along.

i am quite new to this city (around 4 months) and dont have much friends yet because i started school here when it almost ended. there is a bike rack infront of the school between the main gate and the track.

the bike is chrome themed with red, chrome frame/fork, red crankset, red tires.

you better watch out for those ****ing asians dude, ****'s sketchy

Lock up the frame to something that cannot be cut and lock the wheels to the frame, I don't care where you live or how nice it is, if bike thieves want it, they'll take it. BTW, I found it funny that you mentioned the school being "80% white kids and 20% asian" If there were any blacks Mexicans or Puerto Ricans I guess you'd be a bit more careful? but it's just Asians, if anything they'll calculate the chances of your bike being recovered. :twitchy: ;)

Way back in HS, people always liked to do fun stuff like disconnect brakes, quick releases, etc, etc, etc in an attempt to kill you in a hilarious manner.

yeah it really depends on your school. It might be fine, it might get stolen. Odds are though, that if you use a nice u-lock it will not be stolen. Even if the kids at school wanted to steal it, they would probablly not have the time or tools to break a u-lock considering most schools have security guards and cameras these days.

Vandalism is a different story, though. I rode a moped to high school and it got vandalized. I put a kerry/edwards bumper sticker on it and one day I came out and some idiots had covered the thing in Bush/cheney stickers. That was a pain to get off...

I remember in high school the german teacher was a hardcore tri-alien... she'd show up every morning in full kit and with her carbon roadie :). I'm sure if you buddy-buddy with one of the teachers they won't mind if you throw it in their faculty room. Of if you're part of the school newspaper or something, the newsroom would work too.

Or in the A.V. club room no one would look in there because that's where nerds go, and no one wants be a nerd in high school.

Once you make it to university you can stash your bike wherever. ;)

A few friends and I have a office for ACM (a comp sci major's nerdfest) and we can do whatever we want. We have our "parties" there and if you get stuck in the city you can sleep in there. Not to mention that we have our own network in there. But yeah, you can find a million places to put a bike at university.

Once I bought an older Cannondale one morning before classes and had no lock with me. I ended up just throwing it at the underside of a stairwell in the basement of the chemistry research labs. I left it there for 10 hours and no one touched it.

are you one of the few bikes or only bikes locked up at your school? if there are very few or if you're the only biker, then i might guess your bike would likely be vandalized. riding a bike is considered low class to some people, so if they kids are stuck up in any way then there could be another good chance for vandalizism. you could just not ride it for a bit and get a feel for the school first. check out some places you think are good to park your bike. it's pretty hard to say what could happen to your bike at your school. gl to you

I've been commuting to S for going on 4 years now. I have ridden about 6 different bikes, none of which were stolen while locked. (In the city) Never vandalised, just find a good spot and get a good lock.

if there is a bike rack I wouldnt use it because of other kids throwing there bikes into the thing right next to yours. find a pole or railing nearby so your ride doesnt get dinged and scratched up.

The high school I went to was the worst high school on my side of the state. We were always on the news for people beating up the principle and huge drug busts and bull**** like that. I rode my bike to school every day, I was the only one, and I locked my track bike up with a single U-Lock. I felt okay doing that knowing that everyone in the school was either too stupid to take my bike or the fact that cameras were watching the school entrance and if anyone took it they probably went to school with me and could easily be tracked down on camera. Make sure your school has cameras is what I'm saying and you should be fine.

i didn't read any of the other post, but my friend who rides bmx used to bring his bike to school and leave it in the front office behind a counter.

I also commute to high school and have been for the last two years. My school is like 90% white with a bit of everything else thrown in. No-one has really shown any sort of interest and my bike never gets messed with even though it is always the only one on the rack. However, the student population is comprised mainly of rich sports/intellectual types who don't screw around to much due to insanely busy schedules.

I don't know where you guys went to high school, but unless I went very far out of my way to be an ass nobody messed with my bike back in the day.
