Hey everybody. I've just recently got into biking. I started biking to work (only about a 5 minute ride) earlier this summer, and recently I've been going on longer bike rides on the erie canal path. I used to be into running, but my shins can't handle a lot of mileage. I'd like to starting biking regularly to get into shape. What sort of training plan should I start out with?

Any general biking tips/information would be appreciated as well.

1. Dont stress over "training plans."
2. If you want to get good at hills, go ride some hills.
3. If you want to get good at going long, go ride long.
4. If you want to get good at sprinting, go do sprints.
5. rest

This will work for your whole entire life, as far as I am concerned.

Welcome. I agree with Lamp_Shade, take it easy, just start riding, and figure out what you enjoy doing.

Keep riding!

If you were (are) a runner, then most likely you will tend to ride for endurance first. That means going distances, a little longer each time. The speed will eventually develop. The nice thing about riding is that you can take a 10-15 minute break, get some fluids and nutrition and resume riding. During this phase, you will discover the type of riding you like and maybe change bikes.
