Training & Nutrition - Accelerade, Cytomax, Eundurox...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've read in various places that Gatorade doesn't provide enough electrolytes for long workouts and that other products are better. Is there any truth to this? If so, are Accelerade, Cytomax and/or Endurox any better? If not, what should I be looking for?

I just drink cytomax but if its a long ride in hot weather I would take some endurolytes for electrolytes
Gatorade is a pretty crappy hydration drink - it's too sweet and doesn't really encourage you to eat much. What works depends on your own body - I suggest trying a few different ones, if only to find a flavor that you can stomach. I use accelerade cut with a 1/4 maltodextrin. Endurox is a recovery drink, and not something you'd want to use as a hydration drink.
I wrote this a while back:

There are lots of better products out there. The bottled gatorade is pretty poor now, because they changed the formula. HFCS is now the main source of carbs. This was done after the agreement expired with the people who bought gatorade from the original owners.
My sports nutrtion company is about to launch a line for cyclist. I have 3 unique products that will be available in about 2 weeks. PM if you are interested in some samples. In the meantime stay away from gatorade and go with one of the others you mentioned.

Typical weekday rides 15-25 miles. weekends 50-75 miles. I am diabetic, so I supplement long rides with complex carbs and diabetic specific bars, which contain resistant starch. Resistant starches are lower glycemic value carbs such as uncooked corn starch.
I have never been a Gatorade fan. I use a varying combination of Ultima Relpenisher, GU2O and a high mineral count unrefined salt from my local health food store. Ultima has no sugars, so just electrolyte replacement. GU is maltodextrin and fructose for carbs. It can get pretty hot here in the summer, so the extra salt is used when the heat breaks into the 90's+.
This combination works well for me. I have not had any nausea issues. You need to experiment to find what works for you and your riding habits.

If not, what should I be looking for?A starting point is knowing the difference between different sports products. There are several formulas of Gatorade. Some are intended for endurance exercise, some are not.
In typical fashion - your question reflects so much ignorance - that no answer will do you any good.

Please don't feed the troll. "Richard Cranium" = "Dick Head" It's just a cyber bully behavior. 'Nuff said.

That's what I suspected, another internet tough guy. Thanks for the heads up Geary.
I use Cytomax personally. That said, the Orange flavor is about the only one from a taste standpoint I can tolerate. The Tropical punch version is like powdered paint thinner :)
Cytomax here too, during the ride. Nuun for the refills. And Gu....must have gu...
Endurox after.
I use Acellerade on 2+ hour rides and Endurox after. I make up snack bags with one bottle full of Acellerade to refill while I'm riding.

"Not to me there isn't!" Homer Simpson
Yes, "Richard" seems to try hard to live up to his name. But, he is neither ignorant nor stupid, and will give helpful and insightful answers when the question is up to his standards. I don't know why he has to run down newbies or people trying to learn new aspects of cycling, though. Everyone has to start somewhere, and pretty much everyone else outside the roadie forum will make them feel welcome.

I'm interested; PM sent...
