Classic & Vintage - Can I put Bar End Shifters on my ProTour?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

And if so, how?
It currently has suntour downtube shifters, but they are mounted on the TOP of the down tube. Not the sides. All of the little adapters for bar ends seem to mount on the sides.
Would I need some sort of clamp?
I would not want to do anything that was not reversible--- so the bike could be brought back to original condition without difficulty.
I currently have a couple sets of the older suntour bar end shifters. They are called 3090 Bar Cons according to VeloBase.com.

I have grown to like bar ends. I figured I should put them to good use.
Oh, and decided not to sell this bike. What was I thinking?

Problem Solvers' Backstop should set you up.

You need one of these:

These (http://www.rivbike.com/search/run?query=stop&commit=Search#product=51-020) are similar to the problem solvers but maybe a little more vintage-y. That Suntour stop looks like it'd be ideal if you could track one down.

I probably have a spare conventional Suntour clamp-on stop I can ship you, gratis. You'd mount it above the shifter boss, which would help prevent it from sliding. Not sure if it would interfere with your flickstand/thorn catcher.

Since the "new style" cable stops just bolt onto the downtube lugs, you might be able to file the inside flat and just bolt them to the "pop up" adapter.
Then you'd have the adjusters right there.
Not sure that would be possible with the Symmetric shifters. See here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=514867).

This option does look perfect. Does that thing have a name? Anyone have source?

Thanks for the offer. I may take you up on it if I can't find Noah's suggestion.

Well, it sounds like the SunTour adapter is going to be hard to find.
But I did find another possibility. This aero shift lever adapter from Gipiemme would seem to let you use normal side mount cable stops.
But it it might not be any easier to find.

What JYB has is what you need. If it doesn't work, that bike fits me fine....

You are all talk. I offered it. You declined it. At this point I am glad you did. As I said above, I am not sure what I was thinking.

Oh, for money! :innocent:
No, can't deal with one of those right now, couldn't then, and I think it's a great bike, probably worth whatever you wanted for it, which I forget totally. Smooth, pretty. I'm pretty clueless about the touring stuff, get confused about which side of the caliper to put the center pull on....

Jared,
I too have a bunch of these as well. If you require one, just let JYB or myself know.

With drills, a saw and some files, you could turn a piece of aluminum into your own version of that Suntour double cable stop.

You can start with one of these.

I am still working on this. I think I am going to end up using a clamp like the one JunkYard found.
But what about the little barrel adjusters? I was under the assumption that you needed barrel adjusters (usually on the down tube) if you are going to use bar end shifters. Is that not true? Are they desirable for some reason, if not required?

You don't need adjusters at the downtube. It's nice to have them I guess, but once your cables are adjusted and have stretched a little, you'll likely never need them.
