Foo - eBay question

Stupid freakin' eBay. I seem to have no end of trouble with this crap.

Here's what I'm faced with. I own a 1975 Suzuki GT550 motorcycle. I thought I needed the entire clutch pack for it. I found one on eBay for much cheaper than I was expecting; however, it was for a 1972 GT550. I searched some parts houses and discovered that the parts from a 1972 and a 1975 were identical. I bought the clutch pack.

2 days later, I found the clutch pack for my motorcycle. I had accidentally packed it away and had forgotten about it. Well, I thought, no big deal, I'll just use the best of either clutch and make a frankenclutch. I waited to get the new clutch. I received it yesterday and opened the box. I compared clutch parts and discovered that the new clutch was completely different than my old clutch.

I did some research on this new clutch and while it's branded with Suzuki on it, I cannot find what it actually came from. Sometimes, the parts catalogs for older vehicles can be wrong, so it may be that this is the right clutch for a 1972 but not for a 1975. It also may be the case that it was listed incorrectly by the seller. I'm not sure which is the case. I hesitate to contact the seller without proof that this clutch is from a different motorcycle than listed, but everything I've found says it's not from a 1972 GT550.

I bought the clutch for $25 plus $10 shipping and with my extremely limited supply of cash, this is a big deal to me. Any thoughts Foosters?

I'd start by telling him its different than yours, and go from there. Maybe he'll admit defeat and let you return it.

i just went through this 'should i go through the hassle and return it, or just eat the $?' deal for a camera I bought.

2. avoid ebay like the plague from now on.

I feel like I couldn't accurately sell it, though. As I'm not sure exactly what it's for, I couldn't really sell it without misrepresenting it. :(perhaps the guy you bought it from bought it from someone who didn't know what it was, either.

I hate it when people sell stuff on ebay that they aren't 100% sure about. I buy and sell quite a few bike, motorcycle, boat and car parts on ebay. I research and post exactly what parts will fit what when I sell something. If I think anything is questionable I don't list it. Those who don't do their home work make the rest of us look bad.

if you used a credit card you might be able to do a chargeback.

unfortunately ebay's credibility (feedback notwithstanding) is suffering. you used to be able to tell the good guys from their scores; not anymore. I don't even wanna start on my last experience; and the seller had 100% perfect feedback, and had sold a lot of the exact type of item i purchased. I finally got my $ back but it took time and was a real headache.

I seem to remember reading something a few years ago, about someone having bought a rather expensive (around $400 IIRC) replacement sideview mirror for their car. It was for a Jaguar automobile, and would have cost considerably more from the dealer.

Anyway, according to the ebay listing, the mirror for sale was an exact match for the vehicle's: make, model, and year -- and it was a driver's side mirror, just as the purchaser was seeking. Only problem was, the mirror was shipped across the pond to the states from the UK. Needless to say what the problem turned out to be with it.

I'm a big fan of detailed photos. If it doesn't look quite right in the photo, it's probably not going to look any better when you get in your hand.

Oh well, live and learn, I guess.

It sounds like you did your due diligence; at least as best as you could, from crosschecking the fitment charts vs. the listing, and looking at the pictures. Sometimes, you just get screwed. At least it wasn't a whole lot of money; even though seems like it is, when things are tight.

More than once I started to bid on a vehicle on ebay, and each time, I contacted the seller before bidding on it, and then drove over to see and physically inspect it, before gettting locked into a purchase.

I drove 500 miles one time, to look at an old Mustang that was on ebay. After seeing it in person, it really didn't measure up to my expectations, so I passed on it. The thousand mile round trip was a small price to pay, for not making a big mistake on a "not quite as nice as it looked in the pictures", automobile.

Why don't you sell all of your bikes and buy a new motorcycle? :twitchy:
