Anybody planning on being out in the elements? It's coming up the East coast this weekend and I might go for a joy ride or two or three on the cape.

I'm supposed to be tied up all weekend helping someone with a major plumbing project. If that doesn't pan out, I might head down to Gooseberry Island down in Westport, MA. Usually when we have a near miss with a hurricane the waves are huge down there.
I was going to do a ride this weekend as well as head to the beach... But I don't know if I'll be able to pull it off due to Bill. Yikes.
Yeah, not looking too good for Philly Livestrong this weekend, but we'll see...

The club is riding Sunday (Exit 70 going up the North Fork - 65 miles total). I plan to run 10 miles Friday night and 10 miles on Saturday sometime.
It's just a little rain and wind, anyway.

2 words... body surfing.
Just be smart and know about how to deal with riptides (the "usual advioce" is fine, but tack on a "be cool, calm and collected first" to it).
NY1 is reporting that all NYC beaches, except Orchard beach, have been closed for the weekend.

I'm sure they'll close Horseneck beach in Mass. as well, the riptide there is bad enough under normal conditions.
Gooseberry island is only accessible by way of the that beach, so I'll probably just ride the East Bay Bike Path in Rhode Island instead, it runs along the east side of Narragansett bay. The waves should still be pretty good, the views are good, and the weather will probably scare off alot of the normal weekend traffic.

I was thinking the same thing and going for a ride today, Friday but work got in the way (darn!!) and it's supposed to rain and thunderstorm this afternoon too. Meh, I'll find something to do... I'm sure. :)
Yah, I have family in Mass. But they normally come down to NYC to visit so I don't have to head up there. But if I do, I'll drop you a PM. Come out and say "hi". :D

Yep, definitely know how to deal with riptides from first hand experience. Ugh.

Darn! I guess we have to sit Bill out... :(

My wife and I planned to travel from Long Island to Boston to ride the Charles River (and maybe the Minuteman) this weekend. I guess we should scrap those plans?
The winds are already kicking up here in New York on Friday afternoon, 3:15pm. I wonder what we're in for and if I can get out on the bike tonight.

like that's really gonna stop people from possibly one of the dopest swells the NE has seen in how long? 14-16' is massive for the north east, get your wax out it's going to be one hell of a weekend. Also, I think my friends have already set up their tents and camping equipment on the shore, I may go visit them tonight.

Yeah the weather is going to be nasty later on Saturday. It's supposed to be OK until the afteroon, but after 3pm there's an 80% chance of rain. I plan on being home by then.:thumb:
Next weekend, I'm planning on riding from my house to Cambridge and then riding the Minuteman and than back home. It's about 100-110 miles round trip. I figured the ride through Boston would be less of an ordeal next weekend, since people will be clearing out for the long weekend.

Parks Commissioner said two surfing beaches in the Rockaways will remain open since they don't have lifeguards.

I wonder if it's going to hinder the Livestrong Challenge event in Philly this weekend..
It's raining here pretty hard now but I hope it holds out and doesn't rain Sunday cuz doing an entire even t in the rain is something I do not wanna do.. :(

the cape was great. no rain. the sun even came out for a few hours. the coean beaches were weird. the Noon-2:00pm high tide was very high due to the combination of "Bill" swells and a Moon tide of some kind. For a while some monster waves were growing way out - further out than I had ever seen them. they were also long contiguous waves, almost liking breaking swells but they didn't break for a long time they just grew in height in a weird way.
the beaches were open but the lifeguards were very cautious. you could go in but they were blowing lots of whistles. the tide came right up to the dune's edge pushing the beache goers off the beach for a while, but mostly just squished them up against the dune edge
another weird thing were the super cold breezes that blew into the super hot humid air. the mist and fog got thick in places, but between the ocean and bayside was very clear. the bay side was clear for a few hours which was good enough to get me into the water to cool off
got in 54 miles eventually but it took all day and so my 'average" speed was only 14 something

Did a 40 mile ride both Friday and Saturday. Friday was a nice hot and humid day with wind gusts around 24 mph. Saturday was cool low 70's and very wet, sometimes it's fun to go play in the rain. I'm off to Logan Airport Sunday mid morning then I have a few errands I have to run before going into work early.

late afternoon when I got serious about riding it started to spritz but didn't rain. I was hoping for some sky water to rinse me off and keep me cool. perhaps another day

I rode down to East Providence, then picked up the East Bay Bike Path and followed it down to Bristol, 75 miles round trip, since I made a couple of side trips on the way back that added an additional 11 miles.
They did close the beaches in that part of RI, I still went swimming. The water was ok, no real waves, since Bristol is sheltered by the bay. The views were off and on, farther out towards Newport looked really hazy, the upper bay was crystal clear.
If the weather is nice, I'm going to ride all the way to Newport this weekend. The Mount Hope bridge should be an adventure. The state sponsored biking map states that crossing the bridge is only for experienced riders.

I did River Rd. solo on Saturday, it was pretty nasty out there. I made a thread about it in Road Cycling:

On Sunday, I rode with a group up to Nyack. There were some light showers in the morning but the weather really got nice on the way back.

You must only ride up once...
